Full Version: Transmission Temporarily Would Not Go In Gear

Leroy A. Eckert

Today I took the coach to get some fuel. Every thing was normal. When I went to
leave the station I started the bus and everything was normal. When I selected D
on the shift pad nothing happened. It would not shift to any gear out of
neutral. I shut it off and let it sit for 5 minutes deciding what to do.
Restarted and all is well. I wonder if it will happen again. Scratching my head
on this deal.
HT-755 Allison 5 speed electric retarder. I do not have any drawings for the
tranny system or the key pad. Anyone know how it works when it works properly.
Relays, computer board?????

Leroy:

Did you turn the key to the run position and let the trans checksum
complete and light go out before starting? Also the HWH jacks computer
board may have hung on you and not reported the green travel light. So when
you switched the engine off, it allowed every thing to re set. Pure guess
work, of course, but possible.

Ralph,
You know, I may have not let the sequence of events occur when I placed the key in run. The second time I tried it I watched the do not shift light sequence do its thing. I did not the first time. The next time I move it I will see if I can force it to happen. But I don't know if that is a good idea. The jack level warning was ok.

I've learned it's never a good thing to rush the starting sequence. I've never had your particular problem, but I have had some warning lights stick on, etc. Shutting down, count to ten, turn the key on, wait a full 30 -40 seconds, (when one of the buzzers usually stops), then starting seems to avoid spurious errors...

Thanks Pete. I am fairly confident I had my head buried and rushed the start. I usually wait for the buzzers to quiet down before starting. I wanted to get things accomplished today. Haste makes waste. I won't do that again.

Not your answer but your issue is related to my lack of trust in an automatic
transmission rig's ; jake brakes ;exhaust retarders and tranny retarders
dependability.

They are all dependent on the bus staying in gear which is an electric prompted
function. I realized during an unrelated electrical issue -- when the bus shuts
down in transit, the tranny shifted to N. In Neutral with no connection to the
resistance forces of the three type of slow down/down hill devices, you are free
wheeling in these situations.

Modern automatics may have a fix for it but I wouldn't bet my life or the life
of the folks I hit on it. As a rule I go down hill slower than other traffic and
there is always a line behind me on single lane roads.

Note**The electric driveline retarders are not dependent on transmission gear
selection
