So, has anyone had to do battle with the set screws on their mirrors? The PO
had the mirrors set to his specifications and it serves my purposes for the most
part. But, I wanted to tweak them and was unable to loosen hex screws on the
bottom or side. I sprayed the set screws with PB Blaster and let it set
overnight. I put a breaker bar on the hex key and was still unable to budge
them.

Any thoughts????

Jerry - far as I know, my mirrors are identical to yours.

Those set screws are a royal PITA when stuck. Along with penetrating oil, I
used heat from a propane torch. This method is not without problems. For the
screw on the bottom, your heater wires travel through this area. For the screw
in the mirror head the mirror glass is mounted with a rubber gasket.

If you concentrate the heat carefully the screw may come loose without damaging
the wiring or gasket.

I had to remove the mirrors and take everything apart. Of course, those
decades-old plain steel screws had rusted so several holes had to be drilled
out, then drilled deeper and re-threaded. The screws were then replaced with
longer stainless screws. New set screws, new wires and mirror glass while I was
at it. Everything back together with anti-seize in the right places.

This job did not happen overnight but the reward has been solid adjustable
mirrors for the past 5 years.

Or, 600 bux or so will buy you a new set of heated remote control mirrors.

Bob,

Good post. I'm experiencing the drivers side mirror will move and needs to be adjusted. So far, So good.

If you end up having to drill the set screws out of the housing, be careful.
The set screws (on my rig) don't go all the way to the ball at the bottom of the
mirror. The set screws go to a split bushing that the ball at the bottom of the
mirror rides in. The set screw compresses the split bushing which, in turn,
secures the ball at the bottom of the mirror.

After bending a long handle allen wrench, I chose to drill out the set screw and
install a stainless steel "Helicoil" in the aluminum housing. The stainless
Helicoil with a stainless set screw should be a happier arrangement than the SS
set screw in the aluminum housing. Note: If you chose to put a Helicoil in the
blind hole you will have to grind down the Helicoil tap to permit the Helicoil
to be set in the blind hole.

In my experience if you drill out the allen screw with a drill just slightly
smaller than the screw the heat generated by drilling will usually break the
screw free much like using a torch without the collateral damage. Get a left
hand drill bit and when it breaks free the drill will back it right out.

To clarify - I had to drill and re-tap some of the #8 screws holding the mirror
frame and retainer ring to the mirror body and swing arm. Once the mirror was
apart, the hex-head set screws came out easily with liberal heat, oil, patience,
and an allen wrench.

I bought a set of BB mirrors at FMCA for $150.00. Some guy had a bunch. I can call a friend and see if more are available.

If these are new ones, I could use a set.
