Hi guys and gals......Ive always had a desire to own a 1949-50 or 51
ford (I don,t care if its a 2 or 4 door).. The reason I mention it
here is because I,d like to buy a clean one, unrestored and I know we
have a bunch of people from the southwest (where there not all rotted
away from salt) so if anyone can help me find that car I,d appreciate
it a hole pile......By the way If I found and rebuilt the car with a
create G M 350 engine and tranny I believe it would make a great tow
vehical on a trailer behind my BLUEBIRD ( that last part was for the
moderators,,sorry guys)...............Dan Saari........

I have often thought that a VW Microbus of the early 60s vintage,would
look great behind the Bird, especially if both were painted in the
same color scheme...
(and that 350 crate motor could be mounted amidships on a sub frame
and really make that VW move).

funny thing jack,at the flea markey last weekend there was a bus like that! mid
mounted chevy!! a local guy has a vw bus that he put a v-6 chevy with transaxle
in it.it was a front wheel drive deal that he put in the back.the engine is
ahead of the axle,mid engine. works great! people do some neat stuff!

I have heard that some folks now put a Subaru turbo motor (flat 4
like the VW) in the stock location on the VW buses. Easy to get
between 220 HP stock and 320 modified relaiable HP out of the Subbie
motors, much easier install than a V8. Cheaper than the Porsche
motors guys were doing before as well.
A VW bus behind a Bird, with same color schmemes would look way cool.

and you would be right! nothing fiat but the skin! everything else is handbuilt

Folks,
I can't help but wonder if the suspension and braking systems would be
anywhere near strong enough to handle either a small block Chevy or a
flat Suburu four. Maybe Randy has some ideas - he put a 4.7L Cadillac
engine in an old Fiat - something tells me the only Fiat part is the
body shell aft of the windshield.

Tried that and it won't work without a lot of work......the pan extends to
far and you can't get or make a thinner one due
to the constraints on the engine. I did have a nice VW bus with a 2.4
liter Porsch turbo in it.
It really handled the hills well.....it got a little squirrely over
90. Best conversion is the VW Jetta
engine. You rotate the engine one bolt hole over on it's side and
everything matches up....lots
of horsepower with not much money....
One nice thing about VW vans; for some reason the cops never look at you
very much....

If you're talking Vanagon, both the Suburu six and turbo-four will
fit, adapters are readily available. In VW engines the 1.8 turbo
fits, as does the VR6, but you'll need to fab an engine cover as they
stick up a little.
Around here the nearest guy with conversion experience and adapter
parts is in Canada, not a long drive from the Detroit area. If you

Jeff,
That's one of the reasons I didn't go for the Suburu
conversion....the Porsch fit
perfectly with at five speed tanny......
Another great conversion is the late model Corvair with a Chevy 350
or a V-6
located in the rear seat area. Totally stock looking from the outside but
a real
sleeper on the highway....
The Jetta conversion is the sweetest, easiest conversion for the
least cash...
