Full Version: Engine water temperature gauge is down

While traveling to Branson today the engine water temp gauge dropped from 190f
to 100f and didn't come back. One less thing to worry about.. Ha! But, the
other gauges are all working and reading normal. The Detroit Diesel says
everything is OK. Sensor? Bad gauge? Anybody been there with a 2000 LXI?

Is this what they call a Teleflex gauge?

We had Branson Motor Coach take a look at it. The engine water temp gauge
tested fine and will work again. The Detroit Diesel ECM still reads the engine
water temp at normal temps. However, current has been lost somewhere on the
gauge side between the gauge and the sensor attached to the ?/engine. I
couldn't come up with a schematic showing the wire run and I'm not ready to have
someone go in there blind at 110.00 p/h. Anyone have any ideas/experience
here? Incidently, if you are ever in need of a full service motor coach repair
while in Branson, Branson Motor Coach is very good and very fair.

Check the ground connections. This is the most common source of problems. There will be a ground at the gauge and at the sensor. If the sensor ground is to the engine block, then ensure that the ground strap between the engine and the frame is tight and free of corrosion.
99% of electrical problems of this type are ground problems. The wires are usually not likely to be damaged (outside of a few inches near the gauge or the sensor where they're exposed).

Thanks for your input Pete. The gauge itself was checked out by Branson Motor
Coach: no problem with it. We had the ground strap replaced last spring. So,
we're looking at something further back, possibly the cannon plugs or the
gauge's sensor located somewhere on the engine?
