I have a badly weather-checked left front tire. Tire dealers tell me that
Michelin has discontinued 12R 22.5 XZ2 tires. I was hoping to just replace the
one bad tire; but if I buy anothere brand, presumably I'd have to replace at
both front tires.
Has anyone else run into this problem? If so, what's the alternative?

The standard Michelin 12R22.5 for several years has been the XZE* That asterisk
is not a typo - the tires themselves have a star, but in the literature it is an
asterisk, and you will not find 12R22.5 in the regular XZE listings.

Does this mean that the XZE* is a direct replacement for the XZ2?

"Direct replacement" it certainly is. Whether it is the same tire is hard to say
- the XZ2 no longer exists so it is hard to find specifications for it.
I believe that when the XZ2 was made, it was the only Michelin RV tire with a
12R22.5 size. The XZE* is currently the only Michelin RV tire with a 12R22.5
size. That tells me that Michelin expects it to be the correct replacement, and
it has been for at least 2-1/2 years.

It's generally recommended that like tires be mounted on the steer axle. If the second tire is still OK, you can mount in on the tag axle* or hold it as a spare. If the tire is still safe to use (date wise), you may be able to sell it as a used tire. Often a trucker can make good use of used bus tires. You won't get a lot for it, but the $100 or $150 is sure better than nothing.
