Can anyone tell me what I should pay to drain and refill with transynd? Is it
easy to do or does a shop have to do the work? Thanks

There are filters inside the 'pan' of the transmission that need to be replaced. If your transmission is like mine, the filters come in two sizes. A longer lasting version and a smaller (cheaper) version. Since we'll not be putting the miles on like a transit bus, it's best to get the cheaper small size as you'll "time out" before you "mile out" ...
You can probably do it yourself, but personally, I prefer to let an experienced technician in a suitably qualified shop do the work as they have the lift or pit that makes access easier.

Dan,
When I did mine, I drove up on 2x10's(one layer), bags down, and
got to it. Many bolts later, after the drain plug was used, the pan
came off. At the dd shop, they said reuse the gasket, if it wasn't
torn and wash the filter(it was a metal screen). They sold me the
fluid($38@gal.) I bought the filter from NAPA. Oh, it took 7 gallons.
They also said, do it again after 5 to 10k miles, as you don't get
everything in the first change,coolers, torque converter, etc.
You will see a noticeable difference in temp after.
I'm almost due for the second change and I hate to see the price
of the fluid now. 20/20 hindsight, I should have bought enough fluid
for 2 changes and a couple of spares,in case of a leak. Easy job.

It's easier to do than a car, allisons have a good sized drain plug and there is alot of room under there to work. just slide a big plastic tote under there and pull the plug. When refilling with fluid you will reach a point where you have to start the engine to get the rest of thefluid in. There is an internal filter and a magnet inside the pan that would reguire dropping the pan if you want to change that filter and clean the magnet.

Pete, the local Allison shop quoted $571
for drain and fill with filter. I asked if it included any service
besides the drain and fill and he said no. It seems a little high to me but
what do you think?

Steve, I was reading the Allison filter
change recommendations for the HT series and they say to change the main
external filter and the lube filter every 25K or 600hrs and the internal filter
at overhaul. http://www.allisontransmission.com/docum.../1099B.pdf
Can you tell me the location of these filters?

little more about the start the engine to get the rest of the fluid in?

It seem high to me too... but a big part of the expense is the Transynd fluid:
Here's what CCW-Riverside charged for the transmission service I had in May of 08:
2 hour labor @90.00 per hour ..... $180.00
Transynd fluid, 8 (gallons) ..... $208.00
33120 trans filter (secondary) ..... $ 6.46
33118 trans filter (primary) ..... $ 6.67
For a total of .................................. $401.13
Since I have a DD Series 60, I may have a different transmission (that may have a different fluid capacity).
Way back in late 06, I had a local shop service the transmission (I forgot I'd had it done when I requested CCW to do it -- I probably could have waited longer, since the recommendation is every 48 months, as I recall at the moment.)
Anyway, they charged
Labor (time not stated) $110.00
Dextron III ATF, 39 qts, $126.75
Trans Filter Kit PT8515-MPGKIT $152.85
total . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . $389.60
However, that did not include the synthetic ATF, but dino-type instead.
It's interesting to note that the earlier place charged a fortune for the filters (they commented that they'd had trouble locating them locally). They installed the more expensive "long life" transmission filters. They're rated for a zillion miles, but with the 48 month replacement schedule, you'll never get the value out of them.
So, $571 doesn't seem totally out of line, merely somewhat high.

$208 for 8 gallons of real Transynd would be a steal, this year or last. As I
recall, CCW pulls from bulk, and it is impossible to know what you got.
