There was a thread on here about battery's just about a week ago and I
was wondering why can't you use single 12 volt batterys in our
coaches? Of course they would be the type that hold a charge for
longer durations than a standard 12 volt. I would also install
another set of a batterys for the generator itself. Jon

Jon, are you talking about those huge commercial batteries?

You can use 12v or dual 6v batteries as you see fit. The advantage of dual 6v batteries is that you often get more storage capacity (rated amp-hours) for the cost.
My coach was designed to use six 12v batteries of type 4-D (they're really big) for the house and it has 3 batteries for the engine. The house batteries are used to start the genny and a switch allows tying the engine and coach batteries together to start the engine or generator if available power is low.
Of course, you're free to follow the OEM layout or rewire to your preferred arrangement as you wish. Assuming you use deep discharge (marine or rv batteries) for the house power, then the primary consideration is to compare each configuration's available amp-hour ratings and then determine how to get the most bang (amp-hours) for your buck.

I run all 12 vdc batts in my '84FC. I have 4 on one side and 2 on the
other, then the gen set batt, which is separate. I do not separate the hose
and start batt's

Here is an interesting article on Wal-Mart Batterys and there return
policys. I'm trying to figure out how much difference there deep
cycle 12 volt batterys are from a good brand of a six volt battery.
I still like the policy of return as with my six volt batterys there
is only a one year return. Jon

Jon, The older coaches used the same
batteries for starting and dry camping. That is really not a good idea
because then you will be trying to start the coach with low voltage batteries
after a night of dry camping and that is bad for the starter. Right now I
have two 8D batteries plus a generator battery in my coach. It takes two
8D’s because one is not enough CCA to start the 8v92. Each one has
1300 CCA. What I would like to do, but I don’t know how to do it, is
add two more high amp starting batteries just for starting the engine and
separate the 8D’s to be used for house batteries. That way the
starting batteries should always be at full voltage and the house batteries can
be run low and then charged by the engine alternator. I think the six
volt batteries were an attempt to get more camping amp hours out of the battery
bank but the bigger problem with older coaches is the single battery bank IMO.

Dan, I just posted 25 files to the files section and this planshows the charging system in my bus which had 11 batteries and 2 banks . my bus now has 10 batteries and three banks. Thanks for the files goes to RobR RandyDEdA and Me. Oh yeaJim and Gloria held me by the ankles while I typed. I may invite him to the wedding
