My HWH jack pump motor quit working last month after becoming increasingly
difficult to get going. Today I finally manged to get it out, which was way more
difficult than it ought to have been, but that's typical.

Anyway, I will be in Quartzsite for another couple of weeks, and I wonder if
anyone knows of a good automotive starter repair place in the range of Blythe,
Parker/Havasu, Yuma, or worst-case, Phoenix?

The motor/pump unit is obsolete, so from HWH I would have to replace everything
at a cost of $539 rebuilt or $779 new, plus shipping.

Hooking up the motor to battery cables showed that it will still run, but only
if you give it a starting twist!

My opinion would be that a farming community would give you a more diversified service level.

Don: A good starter/generator shop should be able to fix it. I had
mine quit a few years back and the motor was perfect other than a
broken wire inside. I think the motor is built in Yugoslavia and is
really well done.

I find electric motor repair shops like staying with the ac types.
Starter/alt repair/rebuilders usuly redo any 12volt dc motors. I had
a primuspump rebuilt for $45.00 +$10.tip at a local shop while I
waited.

sounds like more than brushes or bearings since there is not a
start compacitor on the dc units??. I would think the safe bet is
to run the genset when ever you are leveling on low batteries so as
to not screwup a hydropump motor in the future ( since the detroit
cant be running during hwh operation)

the other thing that can be hard to start is the pumpside with
little issue or resulting issue at the electric motor side. Electric
motor damage may be a result

Issue resolved, motor fixed.

Macy read my post last night and went to bat for me. He directed me to Chuck
Barnes at CCW, who in turn sent me the number for Danny Barnes in Blythe (his
father, although that wasn't said at the time). Danny was expecting my call this
morning, and told me he was happy to look at it but couldn't be sure he had
parts, if necessary.

I spent the morning at his place while he worked on it. The problem was obvious
(to him) - the motor had overheated at some point (probably many different
times) and had thrown off most of the solder on the commutator lugs. He
painstakingly resoldered them all and put in new brushes.

From observation and the questions people kept coming in to ask I suspect that
Danny could fix almost anything automotive, although motors/alternators and
carburetors appear to be the specialty.

I've reinstalled the motor and it is running like new. Cost was $80.

Greg, the engine lockout for the jacks must be a newer thing than '90. I don't
have a lockout.

I didn't think I had much of a voltage problem, but I recently cleaned the main
ground and positive connection stud and gained a half a volt at the engine
computer and on the dash gauge. May have contributed to overheating.
