My quest to upgrade the rear view camera continues...

Today, I managed to get the old camera and old monitor out of the
bus. This, of course, has raised a new question for me.

In my old FC, I changed out the old camera with a modern one. I kept
the old monitor, which worked fine. I was able (using some
connection adapters from Radio Shack) to plug the new camera right
into the original coax camera cable. Presto! New camera worked
great.

With that in mind, my hope was that I would be able to change out the
camera and the monitor on my PT and just plug each of them into the
original cable, thereby saving me the headache of running a new
cable. The problem? The original monitor doesn't have a coax
plugged into the back like I expected...just a pin connector with
several small wires on it.

So my question...does anyone know where the single cable that comes
out of the camera terminates? And, am I just being foolish to
believe I can use that old cable with a new camera and LCD monitor
anyway?

Hi Scott,

Im in the middle of redoing my rear view too, have a camera and a
small LCD monitor that I picked up, going to install them RSN...

The CRT monitor has a edge card connector on the back, if you look
you'll see where the coax is soldered to it. The other connections
are for the brightness, contrast and power.
I soldered the coax to a RCA plug and the power to a connector that
fits the LCD monitor and that seems to work OK. The contrast and
brightness wires I capped off with insulated crimp ons.
If you need I can look at the old connector and get you the pins
---if I havent tossed it.

I still have to mount the LCD in the console and the camera at the
rear of the coach...

Scott,
The old cable worked for me using two of the old monitor 10 pin connector wires. I used the orange wire for the camera signal to the new LCD, the white wire for ground.

Finished the new camera / monitor install and it came out pretty
good... Used parts from ebay and found one that would fit in the
opening of the fiberglass cover that holds the plastic lens that the
old camera looked through.

That lens was so clouded that it looked like some one had sanded it!

The new LCD monitor fits where the old CRT monitor did, but I attached
it to the front of the panel so I could get to the controls.

I'll post some photos later this week.

Must be the weekend for backup cameras. I finished mine as well.
Only difficult part for me was fishing the wire from the camera to
the monitor but even that was not all that difficult. Mounting the
camera I thought might challenge me a little because I wanted to get
bolts and nuts rather then self tapping screws. I used double sided
tape and stuck the nuts on my finger, reached thru the one inch hole
the wire went thru (where I removed a marker light) and was able to
get the lock nut started. The camera provides a nice clear color
picture of what is behind me so I feel mission accomplished. I
closed the hole this way. I bought a rubber stopper at Lowe's and
shaped it as close as I could using a bench grinder. I cut a notch
around the circumference of the stopper so that it would snap into
place and then another cut just large enough to let the wire to go
thru. Once I had that fitting pretty closely I applied some clear
silicone and sealed everything up. I used the center of three marker
lights as my location as was suggested by one of the other owners so
that no new holes had to be cut. I only had to drill three small
holes for the #10 bolts. I mounted the monitor on the upper left
corner of the upper dash so that it hangs at the upper corner of the
windshield and ran the wires down the window frame. One ground wire
and one to DC current and off she went. I did wire in a toggle switch
to turn everything off.
