Leroy A. Eckert

I changed the filter on my Webasto, new seals etc. The thing fired
fine after starting the main engine to purge the lines. If it sits for
a couple of hours without firing it loses prime. No leaks, no air in
the site bowl and the check valve is good. I have taken the filter
housing apart 3 times and cannot find how this is happening.
Everything a ok before the filter change. Anyone with a Aquahot ot
Webasto had this problem?

I wipe all the seals and surfaces with red grease befor fitting
together (oilfilters too). There is a Hydronic Heat forum on yahoo
maybe they know of a issue

Thanks Greg.
This is the something else. I started the coach yesterday about 3pm, purged the line and the heater functioned properly all night long and finally did its final cycle for the day at about 10am. Temps in the low twenty's. The sun came out and kept the coach at about 70 all day. It tried to cycle about 6pm and no dice. It lost its prime again. The only common link is the filter change. I have removed the check valve in the intake line and tested it. I guess I will replace it and see what happens. The fuel is going somewhere and it isn't on the ground.

I dont know where the check valve is but could it be air getting in
the line between the check valve and the Tank? that will let the
fuel go back to the tank and air into the line??????

Leroy,

I would check that filter again, It could suck air , and still not
leak fuel.

Leroy, that is a pretty inexpensive piece of equipment to run. Wish my propane was as efficient.

This is a follow up to the problem, sucking air. Thanks to all who
posted their ideas. Your are welcome to comment on this post also.
I changed the Webasto fuel filter last month and concluded that it was
sucking air at the filter or the check valve was bad because after the
change it would lose prime. I took it apart several times with out
success.
I started this winter with about one third tank of fuel.(100gal) I
should have filled it but did not. Anyway, the low fuel light came on
so I put 120 gallons of fuel in on Friday. That got me to one half
tank, or 150 gal. My gauge is fairly accurate. That means over a 3.5
month period the Webasto used about 70 gallons of fuel or about .66
gallons per day. About $65.00 per month in terms of dollars.
Now to the point. After adding the fuel the Webasto does not lose
prime any longer. The intake line for the Webasto T's off the intake
line for the main Racor filter with appropriate check valves. The
Wabasto filter is higher than the main Racor and the intake line from
the main fuel tank. Either the filter fixed itself or the pressure
created by more fuel in the main tank fixed the problem.

I know, I just spoke with a friend who operates an SOB and he is spending almost twice that at similar temps.

Maybe the pickup in the tank has a pin hole above the low fuel level
and the new full fuel level and both filters get air but the detroit
filter gets filled up quick when started because the injector cooler
path purges that filter from being air locked??????

an elevation issue with the filters should not matter. the only
pressure thing would be the static 1 psi per foot floating the check
valve open on the Wabasto path???????? If that check valve is spring
loaded it should not matter if the check valve is a heavy ball only,
it should stand up vertical.

I worked on Pick place for one of your old neighbors yesterday and
today. moved 1,200 yards on a 3/4 acre slope. I was going to look
for your old house on W.spur to see if it was the one I looked at
in '90 but didnt know if I could turn my rig at the deadend?

Greg; I don't know really. I turned it on two days ago because it was to get cold, worked as advertised. It snowed all day yesterday, down to 21 last night, 55 today to be 27 tonight. It came on and worked fine about one hour ago after sitting dormant all day. My theory is it's like the ocean. The deeper your go the more it hurts you ears until death. Perhaps, the extra fuel provides more static pressure in the inlet line. I did not start the main engine.
My old home on Whispering Spur is the second home on the right. When I was out there in July-August I could hardly find the entry because of the trees. The top of the street used to have a circle turn around. I sold it to the dude that chopped his mommas head off to preserve it for the Cryonic Society. That's no B/S. I did not know it at the time. I became friends with him until I found that out. I high tailed it. I have looked a little closer at friends since then. bbbbbaahlol,lol When you get time I will tell you how
