Just got home from Charleston SC where I was dealing with some
Alternator issues on our 86FC35 I hope they are taken care of now...
that will be another post. While there (waiting for two days) I
decided to check the air filter for the CAT 3208 TURBO. It would
smoke just a little when into the throttle..I thought hmmm.. so I was
gonna check the fuel filter for water and the air filter. I am glad I
did!! I thought that the big galvanized box had an element in it,
just pry it open and there it would be!! WRONG.. the whole box is
the filter!! I tried for 30 mins to try and pry the top of the box
open to see the element..surely my guy that does my service has
changed it WRONG AGAIN..(feeling stupid here) Well the Kamfill-Farr #
049261-000 is very hard to find can anyone give me some advice or
part # (wix or racor) INTERESTINGLY when I did finally get the box
out I noticed that the paint inside the intake has begun to "flake" I
actually found flakes of paint on top of the screen going into the
motor!!!(THAT CAN'T BE GOOD) I will immediately cover the intake and
wire brush the whole intake area where the filter sits...Does anyone
know what type of paint to use is there a special type??? MIKE H your
thoughts?? TIA

I just walked into the local CarQuest parts store and gave them the
filter number on my BB Service Parts Sheet. Seventy-some dollars
later I was out the door with the filter element under my arm.

The old filter didn't look bad at all, but the difference in power
was obvious right away.

As far as paint, the trick is surface preparation. If the surface is
clean and just a little roughed up (steel wool or some other
abrasive) then a decent paint should stay there for a long time. I
like laquer thinner to clean metal surfaces B4 paint, but knowing
this list, somebody will prolly know about a better cleaning agent.
Use a solvent-based paint!

1986 - you prolly got some of the same crap they painted my 89 Chev
pickup with. Lost a couple thou on that not-so-better idea.

HI Scott,

Farr was bought out by Fleetgard a few years ago and Fleetgard is
owned by Cummins. Try a Cummins distributor - chances he will either
have your filter in stock or can get it fast. A couple of numbers
that might help - Farr Co. - 310-536-6300 in El Segundo, CA -
Fleetgard Inc - (800) 251-6791 in Cookeville, TN. It has been a while
since I got these numbers so area codes may have changed.

The last two I bought had a FARR sticker under the Fleetguard
sticker, were in stock at my local truck-parts supplier, about $50/ea.

If you have no luck before tomorrow noon, I will be out at the
warehouse where I have a spare in the box, and will get the numbers
off of the box.
