Fred Hulse



While at the Q rallyLucas Willemsefound some sidewall cracking on the left side tires that I figure were exposed to the southern sun before I could get my cover and sunshade built,being these and the balance of the 8 tires were but four years old, I was thinking to replace the three that have the sun exposure and replace the balance at the normal seven year life span.
Is there any reason not to do this?

Fred,It may be good to put your bus on a steering tire rotation. If
you replace a 2 tire set every 2 years, you never have tires older
than 8years. The other advantage is you never steer on tires older
than 2years. If one of the three is in better shape I would pair it
with the duel and keep it sun damaged exposed so you can keep an eye
on it or just replace it and drop a new on the tag. Lucas would not
have made a suggestion if the tires were perfect, notice he said
nothing about Jeanne's chili.

I think I understand your suggestion as:
Get two new fronts and put the one that is best of the three on the duals.
Makes good economic sense to me.
Then go have a bowl of Jeanne's chili,right?

Fred, close, Chili first.

It is not necessary to match tire wear/size across an axle but it is
necessary to match tire size in pairs on the duel.

Hi Fred,
When you replace tires on duel wheels, make sure they are the same.
Replacing one means that one tire doesn't have the same diameter as the
other one (wear pattern) so the bigger diameter tire will have to carry
more weight. Not good.

I wonder if I can pop in with a question. I've been following this
discussion and wasn't clear on the comment on matching duals. How
would you match the size (other than nominal tire size)? If you take
two steer axle tires and move them aft to the drive axle would you
then put them on the same side to make sure they are the same? Then
move the two drive tires to the tag??

The statement of matching duals simply expained is that the tires need to be the same in size or diameter and width in order for both tires to carry their equal share of the load.

Yep,
Take the steer tires and put them on the same side..i.e. both on left
drive axle...or right axle. Then move the old tires to tag status.
