I'm having a problem with the power steering on my '83 FC-35, and
after looking through the archives I'm afraid I probably know what the
answer is, but being a "new" BB owner; just wanted the experts to
confirm my suspicions of needing a new or rebuilt PS pump.

The problem I'm having is that I can only turn the wheel less then a
1/4 turn when the coach is stationary. Beyond that point, the wheel
stiffens up, accompanied by some loud squealing and growling. When
moving, it seems to work ok, but at low speeds (such as when parking
in a tight spot) it doesn't want to turn more then a 1/4 turn of the
wheel. When I took a test drive prior to purchasing it, all worked
fine during the brief trip. Now however, it's a different story. I
was able to back the coach into it's storage spot by making what
seemed like a 30-point turn, but I need to move it to a different
location soon and I'm at somewhat of a loss as to what I'm up against
in terms of the repair. Considering the time of year & weather, I'd
like to get a mobile mechanic out to look at it if I can, but not sure
I'd have much luck with that. How involved of a R&R job is this?

Probably need to tighten the belt. It can be done from the bottom. Not easily,
but it can be done. If the pump area is too nasty to see the bolts and such, a
couple of cans of brake kleen will reveal most of what you need to see. You
will of course place a drain pan under the pump while cleaning.

Check the fluid level before calling the mobile Guy.
There may be a power steerng fluid leak.

You have it right Rose Mary. It does help to have the belts very tight to
stop the squeals and slipping but, at a stop, there just isn't enough power
steering to move the wheels. You should only be turning the wheels when the
coach has some movement, forward or backwards.

When we arrived here Monday, it was beautifully clear and 65. Yesterday
evening at dusk, the wind came up gusting 20 to 25 and the temperature dropped
to
mid 40's. It has continued to blow pretty hard all day today and this
evening with the temperature remaining in mid 40 to low 40's. We are parked in
the
River Palms upper parking lot. We have a gorgeous view but there is no way we
could sit outside to enjoy it. We are moving up to Las Vegas Saturday to
meet our daughter for Christmas Sunday morning. We made a trial run to Vegas
today. Windy and 46 degrees.
I don't know what type of work you plan but outside work will be not so
pleasant.

south of Laughlin, about 18 miles, and plan to go over there next week to do

Thanks everyone for the replies! I do still get some squealing and
resistance when turning the wheel when moving slowly. And the
previous owner mentioned that there is a small PS leak, so looks like
I do have some work to do in that area, but the problem doesn't appear
as critical as I originally though. Have a great holiday!
