8v92 owners...what temp does your engine run when cruising?

Mine hovers around 190. When it creeps a bit past the 190 line on the
gauge, I assume the fan kicks in, and it cools to just below 190 on the
gauge. Then it heats back up and the process is repeated.

Is this similar to other owners' experiences?

Exactly what happens with mine. It typically only goes 5 to 8 degrees over 190
before the fan kicks in and lowers it back down to the 190 range.

That pretty much describes what I see on my analoge guage. My VMSPC will
register as high as 199. It does, as you say, go up and down in conjunction
with the fan on and off. If I leave the fan override on then the temp does
not fluctuate and stays steady......usually around188F

Major detail on 8v92 temps in the archives. try a message search. I
search these archives and get most of my answers/ input. Not saying
you are lazy just saying you may be missing the quality input
archived on this site. The yahoo message search crawler is lame but
you can also do a google advance search and list this site to get a
more refined result.

Our '87 PT38 performed about the same...after new thermostats and radiator
cleaning the temp. runs about 180 and rarely climbs to 190 on the steep
grades. Oil temperature is running cooler as well.

Observing the VMSpc digital reading, I believe my cutin/outs are 196 and 190,
and on tyical non-stress level driving there is one degree of over/undershoot,
so the temp floats between 189 and 197. I could not possibley say that from the
analog gauge, other than to say the bottom is just below 190, and the top a few
degrees above 190.

With the fan override on the temps run steady dependent on load and ambient.
Under non-stress conditions that is about 180, presumably where the water
thermostat is. I've touched 200 a couple of times, but nothing higher.

I do not know what year Alarmstat electric controls were first installed by BB.
By reading posts on this and other forums apparently some earlier fan controls
were air operated. I have personally seen two coaches without either one. Mine
is a DDEC II and has an Alarmstat. The factory setting was 195 degrees. The
typical Alarmstat has an operating range of 8-10 degrees. I changed mine to 190
degrees some time ago. With the chassis air and the fan override off, the
temperature will cycle. There will be a noticeable difference in Winter due to
OAT being lower. In Summer the temperature should remain stable at about 190
degrees simply because the road surface temperature may not allow radiator water
to be cooled to the cut in point of the Alarmstat.(ie. the fan is constantly in
high mode.) In any case, if the fan override or the chassis a/c is on the fan is
always in high mode. Temperatures should remain stable in this configuration
until significant loads are introduced. Water
temperature on different coaches with the same Alarmstat configuration could be
as much as 5 degrees different depending on the placement of the chassis a/c
condenser (mine covers most of the front of the engine radiator, others are on
top of the bus with separate fans), how clean the radiator is and other factors.
I recently found from another owner that the fan is controlled by the DDEC
control unit on units with DDECIII configuration.Probably a later model Series
60.
If all works according to the book, mine will alarm at 210 degrees and shut down
a 215 degrees.
The real key is the engine oil temperature. It is controlled by the water temp.
All that being said, mine runs normally between 185 and 193 on the VMSpc. With
the fan override on I can see stable temperatures in Winter in the 178 degree
range. Summer between 188-190 with the chassis a/c on.
Hope this helps.
