Hi all:
Anyone done their own removal and reinstall of exhaust stack in the
chase of a WB coach? I have a 92WB40.
I have removed the top tip and the top bracket holding the top of
the muffler to the chase. There is another similar bracket at the
bottom of the muffler, which is about 16" up from the bottom of the
chase. Anyone have any idea how to remove these bolts. Also, how
about loosening the clamp on the pipe. I could use a long extension on
the bottom, but what happens when the top nuts start turning. It is
at least 4 feet down from the top of the chase.
All the elbows are rusted together where they join other pipes.
BB put the wrong kind of tip on top and the rain has gotten in and
rusted everything. The muffler itself looks pretty good.
I'd love to have a conversation with the *#!*) that designed this
install.

have to do mine we're going to put in a straight pipe with no muffler
first to see how loud it is. With a turbo there is a chance that it won't be
too loud. I did this with a 94 Chev Turbo Diesel PU and it was throaty but
not obnoxious. We'll see I guess.

Thanks Rob. Frankly, I was thinking of the same thing, but my first
problem is getting the darn thing out of the hole. Randy has
responded and said that he and a friend pulled it out, but he hasn't
said how yet.

I'm sure he'll elaborate on his removal. It would be very interesting if you
put in a temporary straight piece of pipe to see what it would sound like
without a muffler. I hope you do as this could be a major cost and possibly
labour saving DIY

I just finished a conversation with Ralph Fullenwider. He did one on
Jack & Liz's coach. Needless to say, it was awful and it took both to
do it. They went back with a 5" muffler because the cost of the 6"
muffler was more alone than what all the 5" pieces cost with the muffler.
If a straight pipe isn't too expensive to try, I'll do it, otherwise
we'll see.
I wish I had someone close by that could give me a hand. I think it
will take two people to accomplish.

I know we are talking about different coaches, but my 86 PT with 8v92
is currently running with no muffler, and I will be adding one. It
is loud enough to be a nuisance.

I note that Colorado has a law that "exhaust brakes must have
mufflers" ... so that might be a factor depending on the type of
retarder you have.

Is the muffler rusted out? On my FC the outlet pipe makes about a 45
degree bend up and over time a nice rusted hole opened up at this
location. To fix this problem I covered the rust out area with some
sheet metal and some fire resistant gasket material and covered the
rusted hole at that point. I used gasket material first and then
made a sheet metal cover to surround the pipe and then I used
stainless steel hose clamps to hold the patch in place. It really
did the trick for getting rid of that hole after the muffler and has
lasted so far two years. Oh yes I did clean up the area around the
rustout and primed it with a rust stopping paint.
Now I was wondering if your muffler could be repaired in this manner?
They certainly have material that you can rap around your muffler and
with a little bit of brain power you could put a sleeve around the
whole muffler or whatever area that giving you the problem.
