You can ruin an alternator by running it with a dead bank of batteries.
That what an Alternator shop told me. The battery charger would not ruin it.
My charger is on all the time.

Can you damage the alternator by running the battery charger while the
engine is running? I have a new alternator that has failed after its
first trip. I'm just trying to figure out what happened. Thanks for any
comment.

I have done this with both the old battery boilers as well as the
latest technology multi stage chargers while plugged into shore power
and working on the engine and a few time running down the highway
(with the ACs on) with the generator running - no problem with the
alternator. However, I have blown out alternators in my boat by
momentary disconnecting them while the engine was running (switching
from one battery bank to another)
