I looked into cranes and concluded they were too expensive for the number of
times I expect to use it.

The tire(s) are very heavy and awkward. I estimate over 100 lbs. You need a
lift or rope & pulley system to get it up. You can roll if off as
mentioned, but it will bounce. If you are strong enough you can pick it up and
toss
if off so it lands on its side, no bounce.

Due to the weight, I though just lowering it with a rope was a good way to
get hurt, so I have devised a method of lowering a tire with a
rope/pulley/belay (sp) system.
1. use a sling around the tire (a bicycle coated wire rope works) with
eyes (loops) and either end.
2. fix one end of the rope to the roof (I use one of the tire tie down
brackets)
3. run the rope through the sling eyes back to you
4. use a piece of carpet or similar to protect the body of the coach
where the rope is going to go over the side
5. use a figure eight brake (a rock climbing tool you can buy for
$15-20) with the rope fixed around your hips.
The sling eyes act as a pulley and this set-up cuts the weight of the tire
you must hold by 50%. I practiced this and sat down on the roof while
lowering in over my ladder. I needed my feet to push it over the edge to get
it
started.

You may be thinking this is a lot of work and it is. But my original
thought of just throwing if off was met with a vision of causing some serious
damage to something or someone. I've probably got $50 into the whole thing, a
lot
cheaper than a crane. But a crane would be real nice. Look up davit cranes
used on boats and you'll get an idea of what is available.

Does anybody out there know anything about roof mounted cranes for a
spare tire? I've heard of them but never seen one. My last trip to
Texas I lost a tag tire to a balloned side wall. Caught it in time. But
it did pop the next morning. So I've decided that a spare is in order.
Any help would be great.

Carried one on my 85/40 and simply rolled it off the roof onto the ground the
one time we needed it; Bob's idea of a rope sounds too hard to me. Makes a hell
of a bounce and everyone runs.

Wallace, I figured you could have the mrs. roll it off the roof and
then being the Texan you are could probably laso that tire before the
second bounce. what are your winter plans this year? Bob 93pt-

Hi from Azle. We are going to KOA SPI on 12-29 for Jan & Feb. Have lot # 6
reserved since last year. Look us up if you come down. As to the tire, I got a
Mexican to roll it off and another one to catch it; works real well.

Kurt. I have one of the original crane's on my 83PT35 along with the spare.
I have not used it for the tire yet but when i changed out the front roof ac
it sure came in handy.

While I was talking the previous owner I asked him why a stud was
placed up on the roof and he told me the original owner had a spare
tire secured with that stud. He also mentioned that he used a fork
lift to get that tire and rim down oft the coach. I would think
nowadays that most anywhere you go in the United States that you
could buy a tire for one of our rigs or at least order one up.

And I don't know what kind of UV protection you would haft to have
on your spare tire but it seems to me that that a spare tire would be
cooking up on the roof if it was down in Arizona. Jon

I have one that was made special for the 91. It is a simple L shape
stainless steel tube for use with a 5:1 hand winch. The L is gusset
welded in the corner for added strength. The L rod slips into a
over-sized receiver tube on a corner bracket, that bolts to the corner
of the goat rail for added strength. I'll try to get pictures and
post them next weekend. Steve Gureasko took measurements and may have
pictures that he can post already.

Personally, I don't need the extra weight for more reasons than a spare tire. If
you have a spare, you need a 20,000 pound jack and tons of other crap also
unless you intend to call road service to change the thing. I ain't changing a
tire using the bus jacks. Just my opinion. Most folks ignore my opinion because
opinions are like, you know, everyone has one. lol
