Wanderlodge Gurus - The Member Funded Wanderlodge Forum

I hope all of our Southern California members are OK. We haven't
heard much from them since the fires began. I know one of our members
has been trying to reach his brother out there for a couple of days
with no success.

Barbara and I left in our Bird early Monday morning from our home in Escondido,
ahead of the evacuation order. We heard last night that the first of our
neigbors have returned and all is well. We'll be heading home this morning.

We are Ok here in Lake Forest, as we live in a residential area, as do
Curt & Kevin. Haven't heard from any others..We dont have any space
for parking a Bird, but we have the Guest room if needed.

Very nice message Mike. We too are concerned for our friends.

We just heard from fellow Blue Birders, Linda and Jim Marsh and prayers need to
go out for them. They were evacuated from their home in the Twin Peaks area of
Lake Arrowhead a few days ago and are living in their Bus near Palm Dessert.
The following is excerpt from the message we received this morning (please note
that Luke is their son-in-law who is also a fireman.)

"Right now we are concerned about our house. It has been really burning
close all around us since the beginning. According to Luke (as of last night)
the fire was expected to come up Miller Canyon sometime today if the winds pick
up (which they are expecting) They are hoping it will burn up to the area
behind us that burned early yesterday and not continue but basically go around
us and down Dart Canyon. He says we aren't out of the woods yet, but they think
we have a good chance. Keep your fingers crossed!!!!!!!!!!! Our store in
Running Springs is really iffy too. There's fire all around it."

Prayers should also go out to Greg and Tim (O'Conner) who experienced some major
damage to their property from the huge winds that hit California.

I live in Orange County, about 12 miles from where the Santiago Fire is
burning. I work as a Park Ranger for the County of Orange, and the regional
park
where I work is currently set up as a fire base camp, new home to over 1500
firefighters from all of California, New Mexico, Nevada. I've been working
14 hr shifts, 10:00pm-noon everyday, and I'm beat. The fire officials last
night said the fire camp will remain another 5-7 days. Well over 400 fire
engines of all types in the park at all times, while the other 400 or so are
out
on the fire lines. It's quite a sight to see a "city" develop in 24 hrs,
with kitchens, showers, maintenance shops, fueling, Incident Command Centers,
news crews, etc.

Where Curt and I live (me in Yorba Linda, Curt in Anaheim Hills) is away
from the danger zone. I live next to a urban wilderness area that could burn,
but in 20 yrs, no flames yet. It's a possibility, but I have a good break
around my property. Lot's of smoke in the air, smells like a fire, and it was
almost a 100 degrees today. Still trying to clean up after the wind
storms...winds at the Category-1 hurricane level for nearly 48 hrs. Hopefully
we'll
get the park cleaned up (the oldest regional park in the State...

Hundreds of
heritage oak trees, 150 yr old sycamores destroyed, lots of wind damage,
but no fire damage at the park. We are waiting to clean things up, but because
of the hundreds of fire fighters sleeping all over the place, and they don't
want to disturb their slumber with the sound of chain saws.

For now, all is well on my home front. Just glad it didn't make it to my
house. My best wishes to those truly affected by the fires. got to grab a
quick dinner with the family, and get back to work in a few hrs. It's a real
mess...kind of surreal....

Our home is in Poway CA near the center path of the Witch Creek fire
(the big one) All around us was evacuated and many homes burned,
even the $7 million homes burn real good in Poway. We did not get
evacuated and stayed here hosting friends and animals from
surrounding areas.

My company has 300+ displaced employees just in the county. Rancho
Bernardo is the adjacent area to Poway. It was also hit hard. Fires
came within 1 mile of my house again this time but for some reason,
high real estate taxes or prayers, we are safe and sound.

Holland Motor Homes was also out of harm's way this time. The Cedar
fire was within a few hundred yards 4 years ago before it slowed and
stopped. Fortunately, my Bird was at Holland rather than out in
Riverside Co where Greg and Tim are. We had a big Santa Ana
windstorm out by Palomar Mountain Sunday night. Many coaches and
sites were wind damaged in Rancho California where I usually park the
Bird, including my site.

It is incredible this time that so few people have died from such a
devastating event. Authorities were overly cautious but that was
good. Last time evac notices came too late for many who were trapped.

We are still on fire but the Pacific is stopping the advance.
Hopefully, weather will cooperate and we can get past this one.
