I had my BB in for a service check and the mechanic said that the air
dryer was not working properly and that it would be cheaper and easier
just to replace the old air dryer with a newer version. I guess it is
supposed to purge each time it comes up to pressure and mine did not do
it. What is the process to replace the parts of the original air dryer
(84 FC35)? Is this within the capabilities of a fairly handy but BB
novice owner? I am assuming that the parts would be cheaper if I do it
myself vs replacement. The replacement part was an AD-9 (I think that
is what the parts dept said) for $317 plus labor of about $150. I
might be able to get a discount on the air dryer to about $200-250.

I paid $133.81 for the parts to rebuild the AD-2 air dryer...check &
purge valve maint. Kits, desiccant cartridge and new (not rebuilt) air
governor. Shop charged 3 hours labor. I asked the shop about the AD-9
and they said it is a lengthy job as the air lines will need to be
reworked for that unit.

Steve,

I assume that you have the Bendix AD-2 air dryer on there now. The
dryer cartridge assembly is like $30-35 plus a refundable core charge.
The spitter valve kit is like another $12-15 or so. Going from
memory on the prices since I don't have my log book with me, but those
are in the range of the parts I got last fall. The replacement
procedure should be in your blue box. It is basically a simple job,
three bolts to drop the dryer bottom plate, unscrew the filter, clean
the cannister, replace filter and bottom plate. If you do the spitter
valve also, you will probably need to put the end plate in a vise
between some wood pieces in order to get the big hex nut to break
free. Then just follow the instructions on the spitter valve rebuilt
kit. Just a few o-rings basically. Cheaper than going to the AD-9,
which as I recall will involve some re-plumbing of air lines.

I agree Mike. I rebuilt mine and it took me longer to figure things out
then to actually do it. A competent mechanic should be able to do it in 1
hour easily. I got the rebuilt cartridge , spitter valve etc from NAPA for
about the same prices you quote.

Anyone should be able to do it if you follow the instructions.
