Full Version: Generator won't run

Short story: Genset won't run. It starts, then immediately shuts back
down. No load on it at all. When starting, throttle solenoid is
observed pulling back to start, but then releases fully and lets it
die. Oil pressure gauge shows 90psi (!). Gauge works - it goes all the
way up during starting, then drops to 90psi, then genset shuts down.
I'm assuming at this point it thinks something is wrong with the oil
and shuts itself off. If I manually hold the the throttle, it
continues running fine. Oil level is OK, just below the second mark on
the dip stick. I changed oil, filter, & both fuel filters maybe a few
dozen hours ago.

Help! What do I do next?!

Long story (or, how we got to here): I took the bus in to a local RV
dealership to have the hydraulics fixed. They found the problem, one
of the jacks is leaking - more on that in another email. I asked them
to start the generator and run it all day with the front A/C on full
to keep the bus cooled down - it's >105 degrees here during the day
right now. When I arrived to pick the bus up, the sales lady was
inside trying to start the generator over and over again. She says it
was running fine for several hours when one of her techs shut it down
because they thought it was left on by accident. (Tech didn't know I
wanted it to stay running to power the A/C). So she went back out to
restart it and it wouldn't start.

That's the story. It was working fine before I dropped it off and
their work had nothing to do with the generator, so they shouldn't
have touched it. They claim they didn't. I'm assuming at this point
something just failed and need any advice I can get.

Checked the coolant level yet? There is a sensor for oil pressure
and coolant level on most gensets.

Ryan, This used to happen to Pokey (1981 FC35, Kohler 12.5) every once in a
while and it was the reset button on the control box located in the genset
drawer. I never found out why extended cranking (like in cold weateher) would
sometimes pop the breaker, but resetting it always fixed the problem. Exxact
same symptoms. Good Luck.

Hi Ryan:

Check the simple stuff first. Temporarily, pull the wire from the low
coolant sending unit and the low oil pressure sending unit, and see if
it will run. Both of these sending units work on a grounding principle
and they activate the engine shut down solenoid, when they detect too
high of a coolant temperature, or too low of an oil pressure. Check
the 10 amp glass fuse in the front of the control box Check the
breaker box located (on mine), on the left wall of the generator
compartment. But before you start worrying about the voltage
regulator, don't forget to check the 8 amp glass fuse located behind
the back cover of the gen. Extend the slide, crawl under the bus into
the back of the gen compartment. (if your slide is hydraulic, close
the locking latch, this disrupts power to the slide mechanism, and
helps prevents the pesky BB gremlins from ruining your day) 4 screws
to remove the back metal cover and you will find the inline 8 amp fuse
(Buss ABC8).
Mine had a similar problem as yours, and this is as far as I got. When
I found the blown 8 amp fuse, I felt like I had won the lottery!

Good Luck
I hope this helps

Huge thanks for all of the replies.

At this point I believe it is the voltage regulator. Breaker is on.
Both the 10 amp fuse in front and 8 amp inline fuse in back appear
intact. Coolant is full, oil levels are OK. My voltage meters do not
come up when I start the generator and the cooling fan (remote mounted
on driver's side front of the coach) does not spin up.

So! Where do I buy one of these voltage regulators and is this
something easy I can replace myself?

Thank you!

Ryan, I have been reading the generator post, when dad and I were in
Quartzsite, one of the guys generator wouldn't run, his blower wouldn't
spin-up eather, as I recall we discovered that the breaker to the
blower motor had triped. When reset the generator ran.

Marty,

Thanks for the tip. I looked all over the side compartment and can't
find a breaker for the blower motor. Can you advise on where it would
be located? I'd like to check this as one final hope before I shell
out for a new voltage regulator.

Ryan, give me a call on my work phone and I'll come by so we can meet
and I can see the coach. 509-727-1522
