I pull a 24' (box length) enclosed trailer, with a dune buggy and quads
inside. I have a 38' PT, and my total overall length is 68' 6", and I am
overlength by 3 1/2 feet. I've been doing it since 2001.

I've never been stopped, but I know someone who has (he was 75'
overall....and he looked like a freight train). His ticket cost him $700, he
was
deadlined at the side of the road on the California/Airzona border, and he had
to
call someone with a dually pickup to take the trailer.

My dune buggy group all have 40 footer+ motorhomes, and pull 24' trailers,
and one even has a 42 footer and pulls his 24 foot box trailer. None have
been stopped.

I think if you stick to the freeways and other similar roadways, stay off
the city streets, most cops and highway patrol types will leave you alone. If
you are ever involved in a collision, and you are at fault, you can be
assured that the oversize issue will play a huge part in the civil litigation
which
will surely follow.

I'm considering downsizing to a smaller trailer, to keep me legal. FWIW....

I am considering purchasing a 24'enclosed V nosed trailer that measures
26' from tongue to tail. My WB-40 is listed at 39'. I haven't
measured it but will tomorrow. I know in most States 65' is the maximum
combined limit. I also know that many motorhomes on the road with
trailers are well over the limit. That doesn't make it legal.
Do any members pull a 24' trailer with a WB-40, 41 or LXi 43? Race car
drivers, ole drag racers, etc. Any information and input appreciated in
advance.
I researched the photo section and found one owner pulling a 20'
trailer.

Go to Amazon.com and order yourself a copy of the Rand McNally
Trucker's Road Atlas. It's filled with useful information including
state by state listings of maximum overall length. 65' is common ...
but hardly universal. New York, for example (if I recall correctly)
has a 50 or 55' limit (making it illegal for me to tow my car) ...
and a number of northeastern states similarly have fairly short
limits or other restrictions.

One of our list members wrote of his experience with a 70'
combination entering California from Arizona... and a fine of $270 or
more for the effort.

Some states are rather more lax than others in enforcement,
especially where RVs are concerned (in part because RVs don't go
through the truck scales and inspection stations) but the rules still
apply and you might find yourself stranded with the need to get bus
and trailer out of a state -- separately!

Thanks to all for the input. As usual, a deal to good to be true is
just that. I am also concerned about insurance in the event of a
catastrophic event. I knew you Western folks would have the info.
