It is time for me to do PM on my air dryer. While checking my bus
getting ready for Talladega and two trips thereafter I noticed a 10-15
second hiss after the spitter does its thing. I don't recall hearing it
in the past. I have not seen any condensate when draining the tanks and
I do not have air problems. And I do not want any. Has anyone
retrofitted the air dryer with a newer tech spin on filter type dryer.
Do the LXi models have the spin on filter dryer. I am considering this
retrofit. It is not very expensive, considering long-term maintenance
and where the dryer is located.

I just updated my 84 with the AD-9 dryer.
Took it to the local Peterbuilt dealership and had them do it.
The old dryer is taller and the new one is shorter. They had to
modify the air lines (copper) to make it fit. Took about 4 plus hours.
Had them replace a leaking left rear leveler also.
Good work but expensive.

My air dryer is located where the "spit" catches the wind and blows
back onto the front of my tow car. I rebuilt it about 5,000 miles
ago, but would like something that runs cleaner on the purge.
I would like to hear about your conversion to the spin on unit when
you do it. Pricing, difficulty of the change, etc. Have you picked
a brand or dryer yet?

Dan before you decide to change out your air dryer because you are
getting contaminants spitting out of the purge valve, I would advise
finding out where the contaminant is coming from by doing some tests
on the air compressor.

I'll let you know. I'm working with Fleet Maintenance in Fort Walton Beach, who
does my heavy maintenance. I have not selected the dryer yet and I may not
until the old one is removed. I take it in on the 18th. Thanks for the link.
Your dryer must be in the rear down low. With my big body, I cannot get to mine
with any kind of ease.

The BMC uses a Haldex (Midland) Pur Air Plus air dryer. It is mounted
on the passenger side low at the rear. Several BMC owners have had
blowby spitting oil that hits the tow car after several hundred
miles. One member has changed to a "Econ" version of the Haldex
Midland (model DA33200) based on a Cummins engineers advice, and this
has solved the problem.

I'll read the pdf provided below, but since I rebuilt my Pur Air Plus
air dryer recently with NAPA Part number DQ6026 ($123.99), consisting
of the desiccant canister, coalescing filter, 175 PSI
pressure relief valve, orings, purge valve shield, screws etc, I
think the "spit" is just the nature of the beast.
