I had a similar problem, and replaced the air governor. I couldn't do it
myself, because of the location of the governor, so I had a local shop do it
for me (wasn't cheap). I had them relocate the air governor so if I ever had
to change it again, I could do so in about 10 minutes. The air governor
itself was only about $30 (it's a Bendix part)...it was the labor that broke my
wallet.

My BB would only air up to about 30-40lbs, and wouldn't go any higher....and
it was intermittent. Not even enough air to release my brakes. A few forum
members advised me that the issues might have been the air pump "unloader".
Fortunately, it was the air governor not the "unloader". That R&R looked a
little tough for me also...not much room to work on the air pump on my PT.

Good luck...if your Governor is accessible, I'd replace it and see what
happens.

I have a 82 FC 35 SB. "Serendipity" I have been reading the post
for over a year now and have benefited from all of the knowledge
here. I have been able to alot of upgrades repairs from reading the
forum. But now I have a problem and cannot get into the archives to
do some research so I would like some input on my problem. I picked
up the bird from storage yesterday, as usual it started on the first
crank and everything was fine. The air bags came up, the brake air
presure read over 75 the seat and step all worked fine. I drove
down the road about 3 miles turned into the the rv park and noticed
the low air light and buzzer came on. When I got to my lot I let it
idle for a few minutes but the warning never went off. My brake
preasure was down a little the step would not work. The rear bags
were up the front looked alittle low. As I touched the brake peddle
the rear air guage started going down. So I parked it right away
cuz I knew if I lost anymore air the rear brakes would lock up. I
left the engine running and tryed to go around the coach to listen
for an air leak. I couldn't hear any but with the engine noise it
war hard to tell. After shutting down the engine. I still couldn't
haer any thing. Where do I start? A day later and the rear air
bags are still up and the front look low or down. I did not dump
the air yet. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

For about 12 bucks you might try rebuilding the purge (spitter) valve at the
bottom of the air dryer. Could be intermittently hanging open. OR you could
just buy my whole bird which does not have that issue but if it did it comes
with two spare rebuild kits.

Hi Jim, while I am not an "expert" on the subject the same thing happened to
me recently. What I found was the the flex lines which provide the air
pressure to release the parking brakes on the rear axle were bad (orginal
1985). Note, the parking brakes are spring applied and air released, so
when you push in the big Yellow button on the dash to drive, only then are
you are putting air into those lines and they will then leak only when in
the travel mode-not when parked. I replaced both of mine and was very
concerned when I saw the condition of the lines. I am sure the same will
apply in your case. Cheap easy fix.

Jim, it sounds to me that you started having problems, when you hit the brakes.
My guess is you either have a leaking service, or maxi pancake (diaphram). The
reason you didn't hear anything, is because if it's on the service end, it won't
make any leaking noises, untill you step on the pedal ( which is when you saw
the pressure dropping) If it's on the Maxi,(parking) side, you won't hear it
leaking, untill you press the button in. I'd have someone sit in the seat while
you walk around. First chock the wheels, on a level surface, have them press in
the parking brake button, and listen, if you hear leaks, it's on the parking
end, either the pancake, or a cracked housing leaking enternally if you don't
have them step on the pedal and listen again if you hear leaks, it's on the
service end. Don't attempt to take those rear chambers apart, unless you know
what you're doing and cage them first, There's a coil spring inside, about the
diameter of a car suspension coil spring and
if they're not caged, they can be lethal. If you still don't hear anything
leaking, I'll say the air governor, attached to the air compressor, may be
gummed up, and sticking. Please bear in mind, I'm only about 2 weeks into
Bluebird busses,so there could be some other valve in the system, that I'm not
aware of. Oh, and one more thing to check. Make sure the treadle valve (foot
valve), is returning back all of the way some pedals are made from Alluminum,
and they use a steel pin, for the pivot, the two unlike metals cause
electrollosis, or corrosion. I drive the pin out, and run a drill through the
hole, to clean it out, then I apply never seize to the pin. Good luck
