I know there has been some discussion before about changing rear end ratios.
I would like to hear from any one who has changed out the rear end of a BB
with a 210NA to something other than the 5:29. (4:88, 4:65, 4:63, or?) I'm
not as interested in high speeds as being able to cruise 60-65 with out
running the CAT so fast. We do go the San Diego across I8 and to Prescott
up I17. I just don't want to get into a situation where we stall or
overheat the Allison. Any experiences would be appreciated.

Hi Chuck,

I previously had a 1978 with a 210NA. I had the rear changed to 4:88.
If I remember correctly the top end increased about 8 mph. But more
importantly, I liked to cruise around 60 to 62 mph and the reduction
in rpm (don't remember exactly how much)and the noise level was
significantly reduced. I was very happy with the change and think
that a change to 4:63 might have even been better, but I don't know.
The coach is owned by Gardner now, maybe he'll chime in?

I can see one possible drawback in changing the rear end ratio. Coming out of
Palo Duro
Canyon with my 82 FC (10% grade as I recall), was quite a pull. 1st gear the
whole way and
down to about 1850rpms. With a higher gear ratio (I think I have the 5.29) that
pull might
have become touch and go.

i run a 4.44 in my old 81 na fc rb

it made it a lot more user friendly IMO
and i like to run 70 so it worked in my case.

i like to flow with traffic not be a stoppping point.

Chuck;
Since I have never experienced anything other than the 4.88, I
don't have a real opinion. But from other posts and my experience I
think I wouldn't want to go any lower in the ratio. I get a
sufficient top speed around 65 or so, and often drop into the 40s
climbing normal long grades towing a 1995 Jeep Cherokee sport.
Let's face it, a 210 NA ain't no rocket. But as I said, I have no
other experience so I could be way off base here.

I have a factory 4.89 in my 83' FC 35SB and it runs 67mph per GPS at
about 2600rpm. For me that is pretty good, I can avoid being a
major bottle neck for traffic and still have pulling power on the
hills. We took some steep passes in Mexico above 6000ft and were
pleased with the climbing performance.

Hello Tom, Would you send your email address to gnburke@... . I have a
few questions about your rear gear change in your former 1978 BB. Thanks

How does the price compare between changing out the gears and a auxilliary OD
trans?
