I am looking at the idea of traveling U.S. highway 2 which starts in Wisconsin
and ends in Washington state. It seems to be the northern most route that is
not an interstate.
Having said that, has anyone had any travel experience on that road, even a
portion of it? Thoughts and advice appreciated on 95WBWL42 to make that route.

I did the back road deal a few times, it sucks a lot if you hit construction.
They will totally tear out a road and take their time fixing on it. On 212 in
MT got about a hundred miles of nasty stuff, then hit the rain. My rig was
totally messed up with nasty thick clay and dirt, took the truck wash a long
time to get it decent.

We spent a couple of weeks along US 2 at the end of August and beginning of
September this past year. We picked it up at Havre, MT (traveling north on 87
out of Great Falls) and headed east, leaving 2 at Wakefield in the Michigan UP.
We spent nights, or multiple nights in Malta, MT, Minot and Turtle River State
Park, ND, and Duluth, MN.
Traveling the US highways rather than the interstate is our normal method when
not in a hurry. US 2 is not a problem on that long stretch with one caveat I'll
get to in a minute. We've also crossed the Tetons on US 89/2 from I-15 to US 93,
again not a problem. Only touched the road in sporadic locations west of US 93,
and have never crossed the Cascades on it, so can't say anything there.
The caveat is construction. That is an issue on any route, local, US, or
interstate, that varies so much from year-to-year that one person's experience
is pertinent only to that particular year. On US 2, there was very major
construction going on in Eastern Montana and Western North Dakota. On one
10-mile stretch in Montana we were on a temporary gravel road parallel to 2 that
was really bad. Picked up 4 significant chips on the coach windshield and 2 on
the toad in just that one stretch. Had them filled nicely by a mobile windshield
guy in Minot.
I imagine that stretch is fine this year, and can't tell you where the coming
year's construction will be.

Wallace, I can comment on HWY 2 for the parts through Montana &
Washington. One of the most beautiful drives you can imagine. Once you
get to the Rockies, it's all mountains & valleys & rivers. Runs through
Glacier National Park south entrance, into Bonners Ferry Idaho & then
south to Sandpoint ID. Truly God's Country. In Washington, don't miss
Leavenworth! Often referred to by most people as "Little Switzerland".
Great route if you're up to pulling a few mountain passes. Take your
time & enjoy the ride.

US 2 runs from Maine to Washington state. I have traveled on parts
of it in Maine, Wis., and Mont., its a good enough 2 lane road. It's
very remote across the western states.

The parts of US #2 in Michigan from St Ignace to Escanaba that travel the
North Shore of Lake Michigan, Good ride, lots of passing lanes, the rest is
through the woods. That is a great ride in color season. If you start at
the beginning in WI, Florence, you right on my door step. Let me know if

US 2 is known as "the Great Northern" and is described in great detail in
the book Road Trips USA.
The narrative is west to east and includes a connecting route thru Canada.
Road Trips USA covers a lot of the must see stuff along with local history
and places to eat.
The book also covers routes US 93, US 83, the Great River Road, Coastal West
Coast, the Appalachian Trail, Coastal East Coast, US 20, US 50, US 80 and,
of course, US 66: The Mother Road.
The two-lanes, or "blue routes" are also great motorcycle roads!
