I drilled ou the necessary rivets to get the end cap casting out. And
sure enough (Bruce) the spring is broken. Half of the spring came out
with the cap. The other half is still inside attached(?) to the center
casting? Please tell me I don't have to get the center casting piece
out also? How is the spring attached to the center casting?

Worked on mine last year. When I bought it it had no tube, just the end bars so
I ordered
the tube with the spring from Zip Dee but they sent one too short so they sent
another
empty tube and I took the end cap and spring off the original and put it in the
new one. It
was almost a year ago so my memory may be faulty, but as I recall, there is a
stamped
indentation in the tube. The spring has a shaped casting at the inboard then
that is
stopped from spinning by a notch than slides around the indentation. If yours
is like that,
I think all you need to do is find a way to grab the spring and pull it out.
Look for an
indentation about a half inch deep and about six inches long. If it's there,
your system
should be the same. The only complication I can imagine would be if, when the
spring
broke, the inboard casting slipped further into the tube, beyond the
indentation. If it did,
you're going to have to make sure it's in the correct orientation to the
indentation before it
can be pulled out the way it went in.

We broke the the tube and tore the fabric on our main awning. Zip Dee
said do yourself a favor and order the tube with a new spring
installed and the fabric with the first aluminum slat attached. I'm
glad we did, the cost was very little additional.
