I removed the injector pump off of the Perkins yesterday and today I
sent it off to Superior Diesel Inc. in North Charleston, SC for a
rebuild.

I was quoted an estimate of $500.00 for the rebuild if it is what they
refer to as a NORMAL rebuild, where no major parts other than what is
normally replaced in a rebuild, have to be replaced. They will not
just replace the O ring, but will only do a complete rebuild. I had
them rebuild my injectors for the Perkins, shortly after I got
the 'Bird three years ago and I have been satisfied with their work.

I had checked with some online companies that rebuild Perkins
injectors and they were from $600.00 to $700.00 for a normal rebuild.
Mine was working fine with easy starts, but it was leaking around the
head of the pump, where the two sections come together and there is a
large O ring that seals that area. My genset has 7,885 hours on it, so
I look at this as nothing unusual, unless they inform me otherwise.

The pump comes of a little more difficult than what the Perkins
Workshop Manual indicates that it should, but with all of the magic
words and some patience I was able to get the job done. the most
difficult part was getting the Allen head bolt off of the inside of
the pump mount, it took a combination of both 3/8 and 1/4 inch drive
extensions and sockets used separately as there is very little room to
maneuver back there due to one bolt on the injector housing that can't
be removed with the pump mounted, that is right in line with the Allen
headed mount bolt.

I took a lot of digital photos before I started so that I will make
sure that I get it back on the correct way. The timing that you were
referring to, is nothing other than matching the two scribed lines
aligned up, one on the injector mount base and one on the block
mounting surface before tightening up the pump, the mount holes at the
base of the pump housing are slotted and allow you to rotate the pump
until these two lines match. I had to clean off all of the paint in
order to see those marks as they are not scribed very deep, especially
the one on the block. I verified all of this with David in the
injector rebuild shop at Superior, they are the Southeast USA
distributor for Perkins Engines and they do a lot of marine engine
rebuilding there, so they know what they are talking about.

When I get the rebuilt pump back and do the re-installation, I will
put together a detailed R&R instructions with photos on my web site
for future reference, by anybody that wants to use it, if they have to
do theirs.

Thanks John, for the information. Some things I will attempt, If I feel
confident enough- some things I won't attempt. This sounds like the latter. I'm
going to a place in Ft Worth next week, and see what they will charge.
