Alex,

My FC wheels are like that, I had them professionally polished at a
truck wash. You could shave in them. I think it was $8 per wheel.

Scott,
I wish I could find someone near New Jersey that would polish
wheels. I have worn out several buffer pads and they still look
pretty bad.

Was thinking of having a rally here in the Mohawk vally near Utica,
NY next spring or early summer with the intention of having a few
instructional seminars and polishing the wheels could be one of them.
There are some tricks to doing it so you dont wear yourself out
listening to a big polisher rev up for several hours.

If there are enough people interested in coming (there are a few that
have already agreed) we can start making more concrete plans. Another
project might be reconfiguring the fresh water system so antifreeze
can be installed and then quickly removed when ever you want, reading
BB factory blue prints, tracing wires without diagrams. Lots of
things for the kids and women to do here if this is to be a family
affair. Standard bred race track, stock car track, casino, brewery,
silver ware factory, antique cars, revolutionary war history, Erie
Canal etc. How many are interested?

Hi Tom:

I would be interested in attending. The topics you have mentioned (and perhaps
others) would be very helpful.

Thank you for suggesting this and best wishes on your recovery.

Gardner,

When you started to polish your wheels did you start with 1000 grit
sandpaper? Mine had not been cleaned or polished in four years, that
is the way that I started, you can see the initial results on my web
site at;

http://www.pbase.com/iamflagman/image/34374170

I now just use the Mothers Powerball system to maintain that shine.

or you can cheat and use acid to start. Then rinse then buff and
polish that is what the polishers use at the rallies

Gardner, Like John said use 1000 grit wetpaper hold a rag full of
water with little dish soap in it and keep the paper wet. the water
keeps the sand paper clean. Some polishing compounds 'Shine and
protect' they leave a wax or coating behind that protects the
finished job. The wax should be removed prior to re polishing or you
waste time and product cutting through the wax. I like to use
laundry soap first to remove the wax. Mothers balls work good but I
dont like to use the mothers compounds because I think the wax clogs
the cutting process.

All good information.

FWIW...I use a 1' thick, 4" x 5" piece of packing foam (the gray stuff,
it's less expensive than anything else I've used). Load it somewhat
sparingly with the cleaner/polishing compound and get started. The Foam
stays wet with the cleaning/polishing compound which speeds up the
manual polishing process by 50%. A two compound process takes about 20 -
30 minutes per wheel.
