My microwave krumped this weekend. It makes all the proper noises,
but doesn't heat things up. It is a Thermador Thermonic model. Was
this an option in '78 or was the old oven removed and replaced with
the microwave?
Anyway, I need to replace it and am looking for reccomendations,
mainly in the 'might fit with no trouble' category. Any suggestions
will be appreciated.

I don't know about option, but our '74 had a convection/microwave oven.

work with. Start searching the Internet based on that space.

I purchased the GE #JE1590SH. The trim kit is for household cabinets,
not an RV. You don't need it. I paid $483.80 out the door. I needed a
new unit working in a couple days as I was leaving town so I did not
shop this item.
Fixing the old one is not worth it, and I doubt if it can be fixed. The
new one has advantages over the old one...single button automatic
features (POPCORN for one), greater cooking power, etc. So far so good.
Is your unit the convection/microwave? They cost more than just a microwave.

Buy (big box store). All stainless, fit the opening almost exactly & it
has a built in toaster on the right side of the cabinet that does
bagels, etc. All in for $150.00. Works great.

Gardner,
I replaced the magic chef microwave in my old 1980 with a stainless
magic chef, about $39.00. About another $25 matching the existing
paneling (because it was only availlable in big sheets). Took about
a week to replicate the factory trim plate (I'm no finnish
carpenter), but it turned out near perfect. It has the automatic
setting but is not a convection oven, nor was the original.
I pipe clamped a screen over a related vent pipe to keep the bugs
out and made certain that the microwave was secure in case of an
accident. Added spray in foam at the same pipe where the seal was
not good; the factory had broken some out when they installed the
old microwave. Made sure the necessary vents were not blocked on the
new microwave.

Thanks, that one is very close to the current size unit. Is there
a vent required for the toaster, or does the heat come out the front?

Evening Gardner,
The LG vents out the back. Mine is mounted on the wall with the
cabinets & is secured underneath a small overhead. In my case, there is
a blank wall behind the unit & heat can go up or down. The junction box
for the 110 volt circuit is behind it too. Toaster does not need any
separate venting. Pretty neat set up. Even has a crumb tray to make
clean up a snap. No crumbs inside the toaster to deal with.
