Howdy, Y'all.

At night the temperature has been dropping down into the low 30's, here
in Hondo, TX. The previous owner of our coach converted the Primus
heating system to a Webasto heating system. This works really well and
it produces heat very quickly. I mean within 6-8 minutes, I can feel
very warm air being circulated by the fans. The only thing that we
don't know if how much fuel is burned to produce the heat. I reckon
I'll keep an eye on the fuel gauge. I just wanted to post our
experiences if you are considering doing this heating system conversion.

The Webasto furnaces do use a lot of fuel. I had the DBW 2010, (20,000 btu) on
a 40' boat and it worked great but used lots of fuel. (The DBW2020, (40,000
btu) unit used even more). But then, it's heat you are looking for, right? The
Primus propane system uses a lot of fuel also and seems to have it's own other
issues as well. I can't quantify what a "lot of fuel" is but let's just say
that they are not very fuel efficient, none of them. We now have 3 Suburban
furnaces in our "older" coach and they seem to be quite stingy on propane.
However, unlike your system, we usually do not heat the whole coach by having
all 3 on at once.

We converted to a Wabasto Scholastic Series diesel fired hydronic system two
years ago.
Info from my spec book.
1. Fuel usage .4 gph, actual burn time, not circulation time.
2. Burner starts at 167 degree water temp or below.
3. Interior thermostat shuts off the burner when interior temp reaches desired
setting. Circulation is continuous.
4. 45,000 btu
While we have no way of checking fuel burn, I would estimate 5 gallon per day if
the system is on all day. 24 hrs.
It works great and we no longer need to move the coach to get LP gas. LP is
used for the kitchen stove, the fridge and the outside grill. Haven't filled
the LP tank in almost 2 years.

I have an AquaHot heater that is powered by the Webasto DBW2010
burner. In this application this Webasto uses a .35 GPH nozzle and
produces approximately 40,000 BTU's. DBW 2010's are rated from 40,000
to 45,000 depending on the nozzle. The DBW2020 puts out from 80,000
to 105,000 BTU's, more than what is needed in motorhome applications.

In actual use you must take into consideration whether or not your
setup includes an additional electric element. With that included in
the AquaHot and plugged in to shore power I used less that 60 gallons
all last winter to keep the coach at 50 degrees in a cold New England
barn. In actual use when heating both hot water for showers and heat
for the coach you will be hard pressed to use 2 to 3 gallons per day
at 30 degree temperatures. With no electric you will use more, if you
are not heating the domestic hot water you will use less. Six hours
per 24 hour period is a lot of run time for the burner unless you
have really cold, below zero temps.

Thanks for the actual fuel burn info. I was estimating 50% burn time when in
actual long-term cold weather use it's more like 25% burn time. Very helpful.
I'm certain Jack and Liz out in Hondo, TX will be interested also.
