Prior to 1974 I tuned all my gas engines after finding an
OEM plug in a difficult location under the A/C compressor.

Then I bought a 4 cyl diesel car, I decided to let the dealer
do the tune-up at prescribed intervals and do a brake job
as well.

After the tune-up that diesel ran like it was new, nice crisp
diesel ignition, ran great. After doing this a few times I got
to talk to the mechanic about what was done to make the
car run so well.

He told me they put a one-half can of ATF in the oil filter
canister then run it to the floor to the interstate and back
a distance of maybe 7 miles on an interconnector. That
was the diesel tune-up in it's entirety.

This seemed to work well as a tune-up. I did not use ATF
in the tank as an additive, or, anything for that matter.

CAT has logged 7 million road miles with the ULSD but
does not make recommendations of any additive for
engines prior to 2007. They further state that anything
added to the fuel should come from fuel distribution.

For bio-diesel they recommend 5-30 but not greater than
30, certainly not 100, and suggest that the oil-analysis
period be shortened.
