O.K. guys. Here's one for you to analyze.

Couple days ago I was driving and both voltage guages went to 16 volts
and 150 amps showing. Stopped at rest area to verify. Ralph and I
talking on the phone decided it sounded like a lost ground or the
regulators didn't see batteries as fully charged. I checked the
voltage on the batteries and they read a real 15.7 volts. No way to
run very far with that going on, so we headed for a stop and it was
late in the day.

Nextmorning, Benny said 150 amps could be from only one alternator, so
we took alternators off the system one at a time. One was dead and
the other showed a little output, so we headed down the road with that
one working. Within an hour, it quit with a fault light showing.
After I took it out of the system, the fault light remained. I
started generator and allowed the battery chargers to take the place
of the alternators. I do not intend to remove either while on the
trip and try to find a decent place for re-build. Will do that when I
get home. Not sure if one regulator went bad and then took out the
other. I only want to do this once. There could be something else in
the charging circuit that is the problem. If you can shed any light
on this, let the ideas fly.

Ron if you have to remove part of the bedroom floor to get at the rear
alternator don't be too quick to close up the hole after installing new
alternator and belts. The belts stretch a little and you need to retighten
them after a couple of hundred miles. Rig up something temporary as cover
plate so you can have easy access to retighten those belts after say 500
miles.

Good idea, but not very practical unless I was taking a trip somewhere
and returning home to close it up. I could let the belts work while I
do some local running around though, but would not be 500 miles by a
long shot. I might try re-designing the carpet installation in the
bedroom in order to get away with much less work, but still have to
remove the baseboard cover over piping below the drawers.

Anything to add about the electrical problem causing the loss to the
alternators?

Ron,

I have been having a simmilar problem with my 88 WBWLXXV, the
alternators have not yet gone out but I do have voltage that goes to
16 to high apms 150 also, this seem to happen to me after I have run
for about an hour and happen intermittantly. I have not resolved the
problem yet I was hoping the at RITV I could get some hands on help.

Please let me know what happen with you!
