Full Version: Where should the pyro probe be located.

On my 82 FC I converted it over to a 250 HP CAT. I have installed
pyro probe locations before and 6" past the turbo. I have read where
the probe should be past the turbo so that in the event it breaks off
it will not shater the turbo blades. Others say the probe should be
located as close to the exhaust mandifold as possible. Where is the
pyro pbobe located on a stock 3208 250 HP from the factory?

I've read the same debates. Some people think that drilling a hole in the
manifold pre-
turbo while attached to the engine could put metal shavings into the turbo
destorying it.
Some people grease the bit or drill the hole with the engine running to shavings
get blown
out the hole. The best answer I ever read to the question was from an airplane
mechanic.
He said airplane engines locate them pre-turbo. If there was a significant
chance the
probes would break off, I don't think airplanes would locate them there.
I never heard of one breaking off
I don't know the location of the pyro on a 3208T. Mine has an aftermarket turbo
and I'm
pretty sure it's pre-turbo gvien the temperatures it reads and the fact that
I've looked for it
post-turbo and can't find it even though the visibility is good. Pre-trubo is
hard for me to
see.
Do you have two pyros on your coach? It would be interesting to graph out the
temperature differences on the two.
