Everywhere I look there is a detector in my '78FC33. The main panel
in the dining area does not work, but I would like to resurect the
system and get all the detectors working. Does anyone out there have
information on how the detectors work and how to test and/or get them
working again? I assume some are LP and some are CO, but I don't know
for sure.

Gardner.
You can test the CO detector with a butane lighter. Just hold
the lighter up to the detector and dispense the gas.

My manual has a test procedure for the CO detector; it states that
use of a butane lighter to test will damage the sensor. The lighter
is a good way to check the propane sensors but not the CO. (Mine
anyway) Yours may vary.

Oops, I assumed (something we should never do) that all CO
detectors are the same; clearly they are not. Please disregard
what I said about using a butane lighter.

David B. ('02LXi, Smokey) is absolutely correct regarding testing
the LECO 3350 CO detector. They have a test button that when held in
for 10 seconds makes he detector sensitive to, and will sound off
when it senses butane.
LECO claims that theirs is the only one that can be field tested.
There may be others but my '90 Bird had a different unit that could
not be field tested. I don't know if it was factory installed or
installed by the first owner.
My '99 has the LECO unit and, as David says, can be tested with
butane. (I just did it, thanks David.)

I found a source for detector elements that look just like the ones
in the old Bluebirds and have the same pin layout. I plan to get one
and see if it will work. They have CO and LP as well as other ones for
less than $7 each.
