Coming back from Idaho last weekend, my bird got down to 2nd gear. Kept the
rpm's up to 1900 and thus the oil pressure and water temp was normal. This is
while pulling 8000 pounds of trailer and gear.

Curt- the Sand Hills resort is the place. But--- beware- they charge 37 bucks
a nite. if you have a pet-- its 10 bucks non refundable. if you run your a/c-
another 10 bucks. what a rip off. Soooooo- being the x-yankee I am- ran the
a/c anyway- who is going to hear an a/c running when there are 100's of dune
buggies running???
And for their 10 buck pet deposit-- leave everything where it falls

Curt- my son arranged for the reservations. It is indeed close to the dunes,
but found a completely dry campground close to Sand Hills. Don't know any
details, though. It was really dry camping beside the sand dunes. There is
another
campground that is further south but, from viewing that from the dunes, seems
to be just as close and it was packed. At least everyone was well behaved-
which is priceless to me.

An 8% grade will slow down the Bird for sure, and most heavy vehicles. I
don't know the grade %, but going south on I25 climbing the Raton Grade,
near the CO/NM border, our Bird maintained 35 - 45 mph with toad behind.
Only cars and light trucks were passing. Applied the brakes on the other
side.

Our group is thinking about a week at St Anthony next May or June. Where
did you stay or camp? On one of my outings I stopped in at the camp
ground near the south/east end of the dunes. The one with all the green
grass, Sand Hills Resort I think was the name of the place.

Ernie. EXPENSIVE!!! When I stopped in there the new managers said they
were from my neck of the woods (didn't impress me), more spaces being
added, RV spaces for sale (time share). Lead me to believe the cost for
camping there was going up. Guess it has. Was the resort filled up with
RVs? There are other places to camp, but if you want to be close to the
dunes, mostly dry camping from what I can find on the Internet. Did you
consider the other camps?

Ryan, When the time is right I will go for the 8v. My 6v gets 5mpg, on the
flats, up hills, downhills, and since I know her limitations, I can handle it.
There was an old saying that stated " If you need to get somewhere fast in a
bird- leave yesterday" Some friends get a little over 6 mpg- in their 8v. i
envy them.
