I use a Garmin street pilot 3, voice directions, you need to download large
cities from your computer, however no problem. shows speed, time, mileage,
etc. Also show rest areas and next exit stuff.

I am looking for a GPS Navagation unit. I have one installed in my
Laptop that works well, but using the laptop on the Toad is unwieldy.
The Magellan 360 looks like a good all-around device. Any use this
unit and care to comment?
Any comments on ANY unit?
Thanks

Jack,

If you are only looking for basic GPS (location info) with POI's and
basic routing, I would suggest you trade in your cell phone for the
new Motorla Q from Verizon.

I am running GPS on mine now with a bluetooth GPS receiver ($70-100)
and it works amazingly well as it is constantly downloading map
sections as you move from either Google Earth or MSN Virtual Earth,
and the added benefit is you can switch to satellite view as well.

You can get the Q for $100 with a new 1 year contract with Verizon via
Amazon. AND, it's a great phone. I also use it as a blackberry for my
e-mail and can tether my laptop to it when I don't have wi-fi available.

I use the Garmin 2610 GPS unit. Place it on the dash by the windshield and it
works good, takes a minute to acquire the signal when first turned on but has
not lost the signal when driving. There is a bean bag mount with a tacky bottom
so the GPS does not slide across the dash when turning and it holds very well.
It plugs into the power outlet and can be easily moved between vehicles. It is
fairly easy to use with a little practice and the touch screen makes it easy to
navigate thru the menus. It does have settings for the type of vehicle being
driven, car, truck or bus. It "avoids" roads with known restrictions when the
bus option is selected. It also recalculates the path when a turn is missed,
displays the distance and time remaining to destination and recalculates the
time remaining as you progress based on current speed. It could use more
selections for known gas/food stops but there has always been plenty available.

Hi Jack,

I use a Garmin GPS Map 76S. It is a hand-held unit that I can take
into the back country, is waterproof, floats, and uses very little
power. I have to download maps of metro areas if I want street
navigataion, but I can also download very detailed terrain maps if we
are hiking or boondocking in the coach and want to take a morning walk
in the brush. It probably is not the best street navigation unit, but
has the nice option of being portable and used on land or sea.

I use a combination of a Streetpilot III and a Garmin GPS III on my
motorcycles. The Garmin 2610 is also very popular with riders. All of them
are good
units for motorhome purposes, with the Streetpilot III having about a $300
value on eBay these days and the 2610 having perhaps a $500 value.

The 2610 has a touch screen and more memory. The early Streetpilots were
prone to having their displays become unreadable in bright sunlight, hence one
reason why I have kept a GPS III as a backup.

With the amount of space available in most Wanderlodges I would be tempted
to look into something with a large display, such as some of the marine units,
but to be honest I am not familiar with things in that range. I will say
that Garmin has excellent service (they will rebuilld or replace almost any
unit) so that's one major reason to stick with Garmin.

Finally, consider where you plan to travel. In the continental US you
shouldn't have any problem, but if you go to Mexico make sure that there is a
decent map database either installed or available. To my chagrin the routing
in
my Streetpilot III made the entire unit have spasms and render itself
somewhat useless when I was in the vicinity of Monterrey, NL. Go figure.

Jack,
My wife bought me a Tom Tom and I love it. It even works in the
bird. But one flaw, it does not have a big rig setting like some of
of the GPS systems.
