I'm thinking about installing a Winegard in motion satellite system on the top
of our old 84FC
in order to score some points with my copilot. Can anyone give me some tips on
serviceability, usabilty of these systems?
I've looked at the installation manual on this system and it speaks to the need
for a "filtered"
12volt DC power supply or wiring it direct to the battery. Anyone have any tips
on
installation?

You will find the manufacturers recommend "filtered " power as a
protection caveat for the internal electronics
Ihave found that the only thing necessary is to install on the 12
coach side NOT on the igniton side of the 12 volt bus preferably on
its own circuit you should not have any problems installing in this
manner and i have installed a number of systems this way Just take the
usual precautions as when you install a good stereo
But as usual some will not agree

Erik:
In the load center located next to the compartment with your present tv
controls, you will find several circuits there that are 12 vdc. With the
key switch off, locate one that is hot, such as cb-20 with a grey #9 wire
(out side light) and those are filtered from the 12 vdc filter located
under your sofa. Tie in there for your 12 vdc power and your good to go.
Personally I prefer the King Dome system, while it is not in motion, it is
a simple control, one button after you pull in and set up.

In addition to Ralph's suggestion, the easiest way to find
the "filtered" power is to turn off the 12v master switch under the
dash, go into the Left Front load center (above the sofa), the hot
circuits are the filtered ones. In your '84 the switch in the
compartment just forward of the load center turns off the filtered
power. It powers the stereo, the clock in the dash, the bedroom
clock, the monitor panel, others. It is also outlined in the circuit
diagram inside this compartment.
One problem with this however might be voltage, measure for adequate
voltage.
If low voltage is a problem then you could consider adding a DC-DC
converter to maintain proper voltage as BB did in the '86-up rear-
view monitor circuit.

Depending on the model of in motion dome, you may or may not have
problems finding proper "clean" DC for power. There were some old
posts that indicated a particular unit kept malfunctioning when
connected to the filtered DC on a 2000LXi. The simple fix was to use a
120VAC to 12VDC adapter supplied by the manufacturer and connected to
the same outlet as the TV. It powered the dome/dish either from AC or
from the inverter and supplied clean DC. Just an additional note in
case your setup dislikes the filtered DC, highly unlikely but a
posibility.
