Full Version: Steering box leak

Hi all,

I had my two rear height adjustment valves replaced this morning. After
loading and unloading the air several times, the coach was level. Drove it back
to the camp ground and upon back into the space, it wants to lean to the left
side again. The left hand valve does not have any adjustment to it, either
on the rod or the valve arm itself. On the right one, there is an adjustment
on the arm, where the nut goes through adjusts it a little bit. Odd isn't
it that one valve would be adjustable and the other isn't.

On the way back from the garage all of a sudden the coach started to steer
really hard. I pulled over first chance and the steering box appears to be
leaking power steering fluid. Whereas I was only 4 miles from the camp ground
I filled the reservoir with psf and it drove okay, but is noticeably leaking.
When the engine cools down and the outside temperature, I will see if I can
see where the box is leaking or if it is a hose or hose connection.
Anyone's thought on this are appreciated, however, I think another trip to the
garage is in the very near future.

Hot and humid in SC, cannot wait to leave which is going to be soon.

The fluid might have gotten on the P/S belt and pulleys and may be
slipping now. I had a similar issue when I left off the oil filler
cap for the Cat once (doh).

Hi Tom,

Tom Warner helped me through a PS problem recently. High steering
effort, chattering, squealing. I thought all the worst stuff (pump,
box, etc...) He urged a calm approach starting with the simple stuff -
- loose belt. He said "get a $20 Krikit (type I) belt tension meter,
and set the tension to 70 to 90 lbs." I built a tensioning device
using two small pieces of wood with a rough radius shape to seat on
the pulleys, as Tom suggested. I used a few inches of 1/4 20 stock
and a couple of nuts and washers to spread the blocks - worked like a
charm. Cost about $1. With the Krikit in hand I set the tension with
the belt tensioner device to desired tension + 35lbs, when the
tensioner was removed it was exactly where I wanted it to be. I then
re-tightened the bolts (3ea 5/8")

There's still a fluid leak somewhere, but so far, it sure steers
nice! (thanks Tom Warner!)
