For our maiden voyage I moved the 2620 Garmin from our Bounder to the
BB. BUT I had lots of signal loss problems. The only place it could sit
and still get a signal was on the passenger side wher I could not see
the screen. Anyone else have this problem? I dont believe there is a
port for an external antenna.

Jeff, I've asked before, what brand GPS are you using? I've asked Garmin for
their recommendations as we have used their system with outside ant. in our last
WL. They don't really seem to have a good answer now. Before we had a Garmin
17N, which has been superseded by another 17 ?? which still uses a serial port.
We would like to get something with a USB port since most new laptops do not
have serial anymore.

I have a Garmin Street Pilot 2610 which had the same problem till
I added a Garmin external antenna (GA-27C), purchased through
amazon.com FOR $62. The antenna is held by suction cups to the base
of inside windshield in front of dash, with enough wire to place
unit anywhere on dash. I have been using this setup for over a year
with good results. Without the external antenna I would loose
satelite signal quite often as you are, now the accuracy gets down
to 10-15' (7+ satelites).

StreetPilot series, and there is a serial-USB adapter available from

For what its worth: I use a Garmin GPS111+ for a speedometer only, as
I cannot find a replacment speedo gear for my MT40 tranny. I velcroed
the GPS on a bracket just above the speedometer. Have had no problem
with sattlite reception.
For navagation, I have a Co-Pilot connected to the laptop. I just
place the white GPS thingy next to the windshield B/T the dash AC
vents. This has also worked well.
I am not sure about the outside antenna, as i have never used one.
BTW/ I also use the 111+ in my Jeep. It works OK, but the Jeeps
hardtop is made of fibreglass.

I purchased a Magellan Roadmate 800 a month or so ago and have been
amazed at it's ability to not only aquire a signal but to keep it. I
mount it in from the windshield approximately 16" and have had
absolutely no problem with signal loss.

Try it deep in a mountain pass, or around tall buildings, you'll
want a roof antenna.
99% of the time you will have at least 3 birds in sight, but that
other percent throws your mileage off just a bit, ...
