I've just about had my fill of the FC Kohler generator and its
deafening noise. I am considering replacement with an Onan Quiet
Diesel.

What is the minimum wattage I can get away with? I know the 12.5 was
overkill, but do I need a 10kw? Will a 8kw do it? I have roof airs,
not cruise airs.

Thanks

Two roof airs? 8kw should do it.

Scott, I suspect that 8 kw would handle the three a/c units as long as they were
not all started at the same time. But it wouldn't leave a lot of capacity for
much else. I know that Gary Miller put a 8 kw quiet diesel in his Bird but I
think he only has 2 a/c units.

Scott I forgot about your problem of noise. If you redo the generator
compartment with the correct soundproofing material, 1" thick , 2#
per sq ft composite soundproofing with a lead barrier and foil face
you will drastically cut down on the noise where it is just a murmur
when sitting in the drivers seat at the front of the coach. I
actually replaced mine with the same composite but used the vinyl
barrier and it works great but not as good as the lead barrier. If I
were to do it again I would use the lead barrier. You can buy
cheaper material from JC Whitney but for all of the work you will do
in replacing it I would strongly advise you to buy material from
http://www.soundown.com. It is no more expensive then the cheaper stuff. In
addition you might want to look at the soundproofing suggestions on
the site. Soundown has a full range of products for underlayment for
the carpet, mufflers and isolation mounts etc. If you really want to
quiet down a FC model Bluebird then reline the doghouse with their
the 2" thick lead barrier composite with a foil face. You will be
amazed at the reduction in noise.

In the 1982 FC35 that I just sold, it had factory installed mass
loaded vinyl barrier material very much like that offered by
soundown. Wonder if it could be their product?

While Generators are up for discussion, can anyone point me to a good source
for a 12 to 15KW Generator for my home as Hurricane season is about here
again A good used unit would be fine. While diesel would work ok, I could
also use Nat Gas or LP. I would prefer it to be in the Southeast so I could
pick it up myself and save on delivery cost and delay.

Hey Scott,

The 8k watt onan quiet diesel weighs about 420 lbs.

The 12.5k watt onan quiet diesel weights 770 lbs. 350 lbs is quite a
difference, even on a heavy Wanderlodge.

However, if you look at the specs, they get similar fuel efficiency.
Click on
http://www.onan.com/onan/rvgenerators/Qu...p?prd\
id=prod90023

If you only have two roof airs, go with 8K watts.

I have a FC-35 with 3 cruise air underbelly AC units. I'm also
considering a onan quiet diesel. I guess I'm stuck having to buy the
large 12.5K watt.

Hope that helps.

There are other suppliers of composite insulation and less expensive
than either whitney or soundown and a better product too.
I would be happy to supply insulation for your project
The vinyl barrier is every bit as good as the lead barrier and more
cost effective but we can supply both

10kw should hold it. This will give you the capacity for pretty much
everything at once, of course you wouldn't run electric heat and A/C at
the same time, but everything else. I was not happy with 8kw.

On the other hand, de-rate for high temperatures, and since the 10kw
isn't a turbo-diesel normally, de-rate for anything above sea
level, ... and a nice 12.5kw unit would hold pretty much everything on
a hot day at moderate altitude.

I have 3 roof airs. I am hoping a 10 will be sufficient.
