about what I had to do to my 'Bird in order to handle the trailer,
which I have already put more than 6,000 miles on towing behind
my 'Bird with no problems, it weighs just 7400# fully loaded, which
is about the same weight as a Chevrolet Suburban. the tongue weight
is 1000# which is alittle heavy, but has not created any problems so
far.
I have climbed the "FANCY GAP" grade on I-77 on the North
Carolina/Virginia state line at 30 mph, so I'm OK with the
performance. If you expect to drive with a trailer behind a FC like
mine at high speeds, you will be disappointed, but I have no problem
with the combination (62 feet overall) driving on fairly level
highways at 62 mph where it feels comfortable, with some short spurts
up to 70 mph when needed. I believe that my engine had been "TURNED
UP" by the previous owner, who had a fleet of dump trucks with the
same power plant. I have also added an extra 4 inch air intake to the
engine, which helps. you can also find out how I did that on my web
site. Since the tachometer on my 'Bird does not work properly, I
can't tell you what RPM the engine is running at those speeds, but I
also have 12R22.5 tires which helps with the 5.29 rear end gear ratio.
I have not experienced any more cross wind effects, other than what
is normal for the 'Bird, although I can tell when some Semis are
starting to pass the trailer, as it creates a little sway, but
nothing that is surprising, or uncontrollable and the combination
pulls very straight. I have upgraded all of the shocks and tightened
all of the mounting bolts on the steering box, as well as properly
greasing the king pins on my 'Bird which I'm sure helps in this
department.
