John

I need to find a campground for the week of July 19 to the 25, in
Rapid City, SD this is a week before the Sturgis rally. I will be
meeting up with some friends that will be returning from their
motorcycle ride on the old Route 66 from Chicago to California and
then they will ride back to Rapid City and meet up with myself and
some other friends from North Dakota to make daily rides around the
Black Hills and surrounding areas on our Motorcycles.

Since I bring my bike along with my car in an enclosed trailer, I
will need a campground that either has a pull through long enough to
handle 62 feet overall, or a place that I can detach and store the 27
foot trailer. I will need full hookups and prefer 50 amp service, but
I can get by on 30 amp if need be.

Can anybody recommend such a campground that they have stayed at in
that area? I considered using the FamCamp on the US Air Force Base
also. but have limited information about it, but I qualify to use it,
anybody stayed at the FamCamp?

John,

I'm afraid you are about 9 months too late. Those Sturgis folks will have
everything reserved from last year and usually for about two weeks or more.
Also, prices skyrocket. A CG which would normally go for $18/night will jump
to $75 or more per night.

We have stayed at Ellsworth Famcamp and it is usually filled even without
bike week. I think you will find that you need to go at least fifty miles
from Sturgis to find ANYTHING.

South Dakota has a web page of camp grounds. Suggest you google that and
start calling. You might get lucky.

John,
Several friends have stayed in Glencoe campground during the past years
near Sturgis. I'm not fimilar with the park but might be worth checking
out. I believe Glenco is expensive if my memory servies me right. My
understanding is it is hard to find camping facilites in the Sturgis
area around the Harley Rally. I'm hoping to get to Sturgis next year,
2007...damn that seem a long way off.. Please keep us posted.

Where are your firends from in North Dakota. I grew up in ND. Left
there in 1962 before the Army got me.

Thanks, Curt

Hi Curt,

I've been riding since the 60's and I have no desire to go to
Sturgis, I'm just a few hours ride from Myrtle Beach and I don't
attend Bike Week there, but I enjoy the ride. When my buddies head
down to Bike week at Myrtle Beach in ten days, I just ride part of
the way down to Myrtle Beach with them, we stop and have lunch in
Georgetown, afterwords they go on to the beach and then I ride back
home. When they get ready to come back home, they call me when they
get ready to go eat breakfast and I head down toward the beach to
meet them in Georgetown for the ride back home, I find that more
enjoyable than riding in stop and go traffic at Bike Week.

I always wanted to ride through the Black Hills and the Badlands,
ever since I moved a lot of yachts, machinery and other oversized
loads through that area, now I have the time to do it. last year we
met up in Wisconsin for some riding with other friends and had a
great time.

The friends are from Rugby, ND, ironically they moved there from the
LA area about four years ago, they bought a farm up there.

I did some web searching last night and found quite a few places in
the Rapid City area that have RV sites available and the rates don't
change at most of them until August 1, some are 40 miles away from
Rapid City, but that the same as a ride from where I live just on the
east side of Columbia, SC to the other side of town, so that isn't
too bad. I will make some calls later today to see for sure that
their Internet reservation site is telling me the truth.

you are right about Glencoe, they are a little expensive and charge
the same for a overnight stay, or a two week stay, you pay the same
price $500.00 for 50 amp service, but it would be great if you were
going to the Sturgis rally, for two weeks, they offer a lot of extras.

John,
One of the nicest campgrounds in the Black Hills area is Rafter J
Bar Ranch on the outskirts of Hill City, I have stayed there a
number of times. It is in the heart of the Black Hills and offers a
variety of sites which will handle your setup without problems, it's
a very nice destination type CG. Check them out on
