Decided to start towards San Antonio. It is definitely the
transmission. We are at the Burnet Holiday Inn parking lot. NO CELL
PHONE SERVICE here.
Will check this site when we can. Give ideas as to BEST service center
& opinion as to limping in to it or not.

MOre info; Previous owner rebuilt transmission @6 years ago. Been
great. Don't want to drive. Pocket book empty now, have a feeling it
will be hollow soon.
Wife can hear a kind of grinding noise right before it starts howling,
almost like a LOUD blowing on a coke bottle sound.

What transmission is it? How many miles on the rebuild? Have you
looked at the linkage at all to see if it is slipping or not correctly
engaging a gear? Is the noise evident in all gears? How far do you
need to go to limp in?

I'm going to venture a SWAG (Scientific wild ass guess). You coach was
built when Air Throttles were quite popular. If yours has an air
throttle, it probably has an air modular for the transmission. Those
modulators have a diaphragm in them and if this diaphragm fails, it
allows the air to aerate the transmission oil which causes slipping in
the transmission that results in a complete overhaul. In my case, the
overhauled tranny lasted approximately 30,000 miles. The modulator
costs around $20. My new overhaul cost $6,800. I recommend that you
change that modulator whenever you change either the fluid and/or
filter. It is cheap insurance.

I would look underneath the coach. Since you did back down a ramp, it was
probably steep, not designed for long wheel base vehicles. You may have
scrapped or broke something.
