Ernie. I think i have the manual on the jake brake in my blue box. I can try
to copy and send to you. I don't know if i am smart enough to get them to the
web sight. I will check tomorrow and let you know. I may find someone to help
me get them to the web site.

Ernie. What i have is the installation manual for the jake. It shows the
adjustments but does not have any trouble shooting information. Do you think
this
will help. If so i willl see if i can get it scanned and on the forum.

went with the old bus. There is also good info on their website.

Ernie,

There are several different ways to wire the Jake and the Jake manual
doesn't necessarily cover them. I will attempt to give you the basics
on the Jake itself. As you know, BB often does things different than
anyone else in the industry, and the connections from the actuating
solenoids to the switch in the driver's station is all provided by BB.

Under the valve cover, on each side, there is an activating solenoid.
There is a wire that comes out of the head, normally on the high side
of the head next to the intake manifold. From here on, variations can
and do occur. If you have a two stage Jake there must be three wires
to the driver's station. If it is a single stage (only on or off), one
wire will do it though many run two. BB may have relays interspersed.
There is supposed to be a micro switch to determine when the
governor/rack is in the zero fuel position. This is normally
incorporated with the fast idle/buffer screw assembly. I have seen it
done other ways. Best to follow the wires from the head and see where
they go.

Normally, the micro switch determines when the power can go to the
solenoids. on a single stage system, the power goes from the master
switch at the driver's station to the micro switch to the solenoids
under the valve covers.

The two stage system activates one head at a time (one for low and two
for high.). To do this, power goes through a wire from the micro
switch to the master switch in the driver's station. The master switch
selects whether one or both heads are activated and two wires go back
to the solenoids under the valve covers. This is the simplest way. Of
course it can be complicated by the addition of relays.

I think that I would first check to see if you are getting power to
the micro switch. If there, then determining the route it follows will
determine the next test point.

Another thought. it is not uncommon for the wires going to the
solenoids to break, so you need to trace it out to make certain that
the power is actually getting to the solenoids. A quick continuity
check of the solenoids might be in order also. If the solenoids are
bad, they are a quick fix.

I have the manual- It has all the operation, and wiring schematics in it. 20
Pages.

My manual covers "Jacobs electric retarder" 12V Models: J-300, J-320,
J-500, J-520, J-720 & 24 Volt models



I even have the original purchase receipt back in May, 20 1983 for
$5,500.00! WOW My model is JE500-151 it says on the receipt.
