As you may remember, my 91WL (Bird of Week a few wks ago) was
repainted by Parliament Coach two years ago. Someone asked the cost
of the repaint job and I avoided answering, as it is much more than a
rational person should be spending on a 15-year-old coach, but
certainly not the only irrational thing I've done when it comes to
spending money on vehicles.

At any rate, my advice (not thinking cost here) to those of you are
considering repainting your BB, is to remove ALL hardware, as well
as, any part that is removable and difficult to paint, especially
edges, (e.g., the louvered battery & radiator doors) to be painted
separately. Have the coach stripped down to metal, paint everything
the base color and then add the decorating colors (you may have to
reinstall some parts like the aforementioned radiator louvers for the
decorating colors). Multiple coats of clear coat (hand sanded
between each coat) is best (mine has four). Replace as much hardware
as you can afford (lights, etc.), use stainless steel screws to
remount hardware and SEAL each screw when you do. Put 3M clear
shield on the front to protect your investment.

I would believe that the Mexico shop is quite capable of doing all of
this, most probably much less expensive than I had done at Parliament
due to the cost of labor. It took almost three weeks to have my
coach repainted, so it is not a quick process.

Roger it's amusing that you imply that some of the rest of us are
rational! How many truly rational people spend $10s of thousands or
$100s of thousands on depreciating commodities? Into which we then
typically pour more $thousands into upgrading, operating, and
maintaining these depreciating beasts that may average about 5,000
miles per year of use annually. We'd all be much better with beach
condos or mountain cabins that would appreciate. Oh no my friend, you
have not cornered the market on irrationality in this group! I mean
geez, I just got out of the super irrational two Bird club.

Now c'mon, fess up on the cost. Inquiring minds want to know.

For 6 thosuand dollars I can paint half your coach. Now which half do
you want painted top bottom or left or right. and do you want a
quality top line paint or rustoleum.
I dont think that at $6k for a paint job on a 40 foot vehicle you are
getting good value for your investment

Stephen I took some pics of the job and the paint he uses RM DM something or
other. I'll send you a couple of pics and maybe you can comment on the paint
quality. Like I said it looked good but I'm no paint guy eh.

FWIW, I have had work done at Navarro's. The quality is excellent -
better than what I got in the states. They use R-M Diamint base coat
clear coat. This is the same paint that is used on my Cadillac, on
BMW's and many other top line vehicles. I have been told that it what
is usually used on show vehicles.

I am not a paint professional but have painted a few vehicles in my
life. The quality of workmanship at Navarro's is better than many of
the shops in the US. A good friend who had his 35' coach painted there
had received bids from several shops in the US. Those ran from $17,000
to $26,000. He got the whole job done at Navarro's for $5,000. You
can pay more but I doubt if you will find a better job.

Now before I get into a peeing contest I did not say anything about
the quality of the work I quickly added up the costs and sad it doesnt
leave much for anything else either profit or error. My thoughts on
paint brands Iam not going to discuss here but there are different
quality of paint in every line and brand. you can buy paint for 50 a
gallon and you buy paint for 200 a gallon and they will both have the
same label on them. It is then you have to read the fine print on the
label same goes with clear coat. you can pay any where up to 300 a
gallon with the additives and I dont think for one minute that this
shop is using that quality of clear
If you believe you got a good job done then it is a good job if you
believe you got good value for your money then you did.

I still dont think it is a good investment but then I have been wrong
before

This is the classic case of the cost of services in the United States
versus foreign countries. Saying that the quality is not the same in
Mexico is just not true. A motorhome paint job is mostly labor with
the cost of materials very close to a constant. The Badische Anilin-
& Soda-Fabrik AG (BASF) R-M Diamont system is used all over the world
and the paint is the same in Mexico as it is in the US. The paint is
manufactured in Germany and is of excellent quality.

Ross Perot predicted it during the discussions on NAFTA and it has
happened.......the loud sucking sound of jobs leaving the US for
Mexico. The sad fact is that mexico, china,Japan, India and a few
other countries are beating our pants off when it comes to a quality
product at a fair price. The Lexus ES430 is now the standard for
automobile luxury in every catagory and the paint is gorgeous and the
equal of anything in the world. Whats the difference? Labor rates.

I have seen several GMC motorhomes that were painted and upholstered
in Mexico and the quality was absolutely superb. They work hard at
producing a quality product spending far more manhours preparing the
body for the paint capable of doing both the body work, preparation
and final painting, far more manhours then any shop would do here in
the United States. And believe it or not they pay less for the same
quality paints that shops here in the US use.They will also shoot
Imron paint if thats what you want.

Contrary to what some believe the cost of paint of the same brand is
governed by the percentage of solids in suspension in the paint. The
more solids the higher the cost.

Bottom line is that the best quality paint jobs at a reasonable price
is in Mexico not the US.

I live in Mexico and could not agree more about the quality of body
work and paint jobs that is available. Not only is the labor cheaper
the shop owner has minimal exp enses: Fancy booth not required,
usuually home made, fire dept. regs non existant, workers comp dirt
cheap, property taxes maybe 5% of USA, business license zero, etc. ,
etc. The work ethic of the employees is amazing.
