If you have a concealed carry permit, make sure that that it is honored in
the state you are traveling in, if you don't have one, then don't keep a
handgun in your MH, instead keep a shotgun.

We carry a buttless pump shotgun. The cranking in itself is intimidating.

A pistol or rifle fired could go thru several layers of MH or RV while a
shotgun will not.

Laws for concealed pistols vary from state to state.

In all the years I have travelled and that is all over the world and
criss cross america, never once was I in need of a gun or any violent
means to protect my wife and I. When we travel now in our motorhome
we have two very docile rottweilers that travel with us. Missy a
female is 119# and stands 30 inches at the shoulders, Boomer the male
is 120# and the same height, neither of them has an ounce of fat on
them. In all the time we have travelled with them in our coach, and
that has been over 8 years, no one has ever bothered us . If
only they knew how gentle they are! Women walk up to them but for
some reason men cross the street.

We have traveled in a BB since 1980 over the entire US and never had any sort
of problem. FMCA conventions offer personal safety courses which I find useful.
They are advocates of pepper spray, while I don't disagree, I prefer a shot gun
with the first two shell bird shot. Bird shot dont as do much coach damage.
Best solution is to park with other motorhomes and close the blinds.

---Pump shotgun is the way to travel. Sometimes all you need to do
is to activate the pump mechanism near the door and the would be bad
guys leave when they hear the sound. That noise can be an effective

Dick Mossberg makes a 20 gauge Pump shot gun that has a pistol grip that is
legal. It is not as long as a hunting shotgun. That is what we have.

Respectfully, the first question is not really about guns. The
first question is do you have the will and the capability to defend
yourself from harm? You need the abilty to recognize reasonably
foreseeable life threatening risks, and then you need the skills to
use approprate tools and tactics to address the risk. You take
drinking water into the desert, a jacket when cold outside, and have
a life vest with you on the water....out and about, I also take
reasonable steps to protect my family from the small chance of
criminal victimization.

As far as the gun option(s), I would rather have one and not need
it, than need it and not have it. Beyond that, having a gun,
knowing how to use it, and how to lawfully and safely carry/secure
it and potentially use it, are of course essential knowledge areas
also. So I recommend: keep it simple, effective, and develop and
maintain your skill.

As potential first steps, there are also non-lethal force options
that would be prudent to have available. I would recommend a full
size can of OC/pepper spray, and/or a big 4-5 cell maglight kept
handy. Why are you carrying it? Because I need a flashlight to
check things on the bus, and tap my tires...

The key to this is to recognize the risk exists, develop your
ability to protect yourself from the risk, and then hopefully never
need to use the ability.

I carry a gun in my Bird (and everywhere else it is legal, for that
matter) at all times. But I am also properly licensed for firearms
and have been through extensive training in how to use it. I am a
big advocate for a person's right to defend themselves, but ONLY when
they do it right. Make sure you have the proper permits for your
state and proper training in how to use your weapon of choice,
especially if you choose a handgun. A gun in the hands of an
utrained owner is as dangerous as the man your are trying to protect
yourself against.

That's my $.02, anyway.

I gave up carrying both handguns and rifles/shotguns some 25 years
ago. Gave them away to people that knew how to use them, the last one
to my son who spent 12 years on an Army special forces A team. I made
this decision just after a very close long time friend committed
suicide by blowing his head off with a shotgun while his State
Trooper son ( I grew up with him) watched helplessly a few feet
away. He could not get to his father in time, having chased him in
his troop car for some miles. His father had taken the shotgun from a
friends pick up truck earlier unnoticed.

I shudder when these kind of conversations come up on the internet
because what we are really talking here, as someone else pointed out
is USING that weapon if a situation comes up that warrants it. The
real problem is knowing when you can legally and morally use deadly
force. Its a decision that I never want to make.

If there are any law enforcement officers on this forum then you will
appreciate what I am about to say. Even among trained, experienced
law enforcement officers, the use of deadly force is an extremely
stressful, uncertain event. You fire that weapon and you better be
right and follow the book down to the last letter. When your weapon
is used in a situation where your weapon is discharged and someone is
injured or killed, your weapon is immediately seized, inspected and
analyzed, statements taken, and you are immediately put on
administrative leave, and possibly depending on the circumstances,
brought before a grand jury for indictment. The sad fact is that law
enforcement officers are under the microscope today like they never
have been before. I admire them immensely for the duty they do for us.
My point is very simple. If someone in law enforcement has to be
extremely careful how and when he uses his weapon, knowing that given
the right situation he could be indicted and sent to prison why would
someone without this training want to carry a handgun or a shotgun in
a motorhome? You are just leaving yourself open to possible violence
you can neither control or stop.
