Full Version: Total Bus Height-plus my radiator works great, to great!

Okay here's my two cents on bus height. Even here in the West, I
think anything over twelve' six" is a accident waitin' to happen. Last
year I drove to my cousins in Bucoda, Wash, and if any of the other
Western Wash members here on the list know what I am talking about,
the road that is the first exit south of Olympia goes to Tenino has a
bridge that lets the BN railroad cross over the state highway, yep,
its only twelve' six", I saw this as I was doing fifty five and I
could only hope that I had the clearance, Clarence!,(sorry, couldn't
resist) Thank God I did...

So moral of my lil' ditty, even though heights out west are a bit
better than back east, one never knows where one will find the lowest
point above us...

As for my radiator, it definitely does the job, to well as a matter
of fact. As some of you may remember, I had it rebuilt last summer,
and had another section added to the core.

Rarely does the temp exceed 160-165 now. On climbs it get up to 180,
where it should be normally. The good news is that this will allow me
the room now to turn up the fuel screw from 270 horsepower to a full
300 hopefully. I'm thinking that adding another oil cooler would be a
good idea, anybody here done an add-on before?

Plus, with all the news about this Mr. Davis character, could someone
please tell me where his outfit is located? I want to avoid it at all
possible costs. In three to five years I plan on bumping up to a PT38,
or PT40 if I have to, so you know what I mean?!

Also, on the thread a week or so back about PT36s vs. PT38s, does the
PT36 really have less room than my FC33? Also, can't someone just drop
a 8V-92 in place of the 6V-92? What about skipping both and just
putting a Series 60 in? Inquiring minds want to know!

The 8V92 engine is longer than the 6V, in '86 the PT38 & PT40 were
given enough length between the axle and rear bumper to fit the
8V92TA.

The S-60 engine is also long an inline-six vs the V6 and V8, and
significantly taller, nowhere near a drop-in replacement.

13'6" is the allowable height, and a 12'6" clearance must be marked
with low-clearance in advance of exits allowing you to get off the
expressway. Pick up a Trucker's Road Atlas and you'll see the low-
bridge clearances listed, they are rare on the interstate system in
the US.

Turning the rack up on a 3208Ta won't give you 300hp. Overfueling
could burn holes in the pistons, will smoke, but without the proper
nozzles and pump you won't even get the fuel necessary to produce
300hp even if you did have the larger Switzer turbocharger and the
aftercooler. Gives you that '60s logging-truck exhaust smoke though.

I'm not familiar with your coach but if it is a stock '79 FC33 with a
3208Ta in it: turn up the full-load-point to give you full power up
to the max. operating RPM, improve airflow to the air filter if you
haven't already, put in taller differential gearing (4.44:1 or faster
IMO), add an aftercooler, propane would be easier than an
aftercooler, put on a nice un-baffled single-tube muffler, 5" is
better, be sure your valves are properly adjusted, add a boost-pump
to your fuel tank output, but remember that the MT-643 transmission
is rated for a max. of 250hp so Transynd (synthetic) will help keep
it cooler, ... lots to do if you want to go faster. Start with
gearing.
