When we sold our home 3 years ago, the stuff we didn't give away was
stored with the intent to sell it on Ebay along with our 94 Tracker.
We chose a storage facility that had an on-site manager, barbed wire,
camera's all around, coded access. We rented a garage that we could
store all the stuff as well as the Tracker in. I put a $50 Abloy
padlock on that is supposed to be tamperproof.
Went back a month later to put tabs on the Tracker and found the
Tracker gone, lock gone and everything we had stored gone.
Manager said they weren't liable and if I didn't like the way the
place was run, we could just leave..I was so pissed asked him to step
outside and "visit" with me around the side of the building..his wife
said she would call the police..I said do it as I was going to file
anyway.
Fast forward, one month later the Tracker was spotted in a nearby
town...cops followed it and were lead to a meth house where the tow
bar was laying next to a fence and 5 other stolen cars were stored.
Moral...take pics of everything you have in storage, get storage
insurance and don't assume the space you rented is secure.

The perpetrators sound like the kind of folks our son gets to
represent as a public defender. Srange how many meth labs and
tweakers there are in conservative southwest Missouri.
I'd have to call him for an explanation but it sounds like this may
be an issue of whether or not a bailment was created apart from the
issue of "Expectation of Security." Good advice on the photo
documentation and insurance. There are inexpensive software programs
to record and store home inventories or you could just format your
own spreadsheet and file a copy with your insurance agent.

I believe that a bailment has more to do with who and how it is
accessed. If you put your own lock on a door, the property owners
have no access and therefore it is not a bailment (or so is my best
recollection from a feeble attempt at a law degree decades ago).

Bob, I lost two tractors both were picked up off jobsites one was
even stolen while I worked. The tractors are worth 40 k each and even
though insured ,what a pain and expense to rent and search. I
looked into lojack devices. With lojack you must coordinate with the
police. with private locate system you can ask the police if they
want to ride along .I opted to use this.

You can move it from vehicle to vehicle or product to person. In the
past I would reapproach the jobsit in fear as I looked for the
tractor, now I cant wait for it to be stolen and the fun to begin.
