OK guys...I need more help.

My coach now has four brand new T105 batteries. With my engine
running at "high idle" (about 1200 rpm), a multi-meter reading at the
alternator reads 13.6. This is also the voltage shown at the
batteries with the engine running and at the voltage gauge.

Is this normal? Before I installed the new batteries, the voltage
gauge usually registered above 14 when running. Is this because the
new batteries are new and require less output?

I am asking all this because it seems like these new batteries are
not as strong as the old ones "at rest", leading me to wonder if they
are not being charged enough while the engine is running.

It is not uncommon to have batteries less than fully charged when
newly installed, in which case the alternator might initially have
trouble maintaining >14v until they are substantially charged. Old
batteries might not have had the capacity to draw much charging
current.

As the batteries become more fully charged, the voltage should climb
up. If your ammeter is working properly, you should be seeing at
least 60-80amps to draw the voltage down that low (assuming little
12v draw from coach systems). If not, it would appear that your
alternator is getting weak, if a diode is bad you will have reduced
output, or a regulator problem. Is it the original Motorola?
Internally regulated? I believe that the original internally
regulated Motorola has an adjustable output (large screw-slotted
shaft sticking out of the back of the alternator).

The original gray-box chargers are also sneaky. They will hum as
normal when they don't charge. It is very common to have only one
charger functioning and not know it until the other fails.

A replacement 160a Leece-Neville (I think A000128??) J-180
replacement alternator can be found at any heavy-truck dealer for a
reasonable price.

Scott you are describing one of the most difficult areas for most
people to understand since in my experience it is not very well
described anywhere I have found.

If you have the original Motorola alternator it is EXTERNALLY
regulated and you will find the prestolite 8RH2024 regulator
installed towards the front of the battery compartment on the back
wall. BB designed it that way to compensate for the undersized
battery cables (and there long length)they used on the forward control BBs.
If you do not have the original Motorola alternator installed then
you more then likely have a Leece-Neville internally regulated
alternator installed and the prestolite regulator should no longer be
in the circuit. Depending on which alternator model you have
installed the cut in voltage may be higher then your high idle for
the engine. If you check the pully size on the alternator and the
pully size of your engine you should have a 3" pulley on the
alternator and a 5 5/8" pulley on the engine giving you a ratio of
1.875, that is the alternator will be rotating at 1.875 times the
engine RPM. If you are idling at 1200 RPM then your alternator is
rotating at 2250 RPMs and if you have a Leece-Neville 8LHA2121V
alternator installed (representative of the 160 amp
alternators) http://www.prestolite.com/index.php. , you will be
putting out approximately 80 amps.

When you first install new batteries( or have discharged your
batteries while drycamping) they probably will not be fully charged
so when you start the engine the voltage at the battery terminals
will be around 12.5 to 13.2 volts and will slowly climb to 14.2 volts
when they are fully charged. These voltages are only typical and your
specific batteries and cables may change them.

One of the best upgrades you can make to a forward control in my
opinion is to move the chargers to the compartment under the
passenger side to sharply reduce the cable lengths.

As many of us know, BlueBird installed an internally regulated
Motorola, an externally regulated Motorola, and an internally
regulated Leece-Neville with external voltage sense as original
equipment on the 3208 Cat. The internally regulated Motorola is in my
opinion and experience a very good unit and adjustable.

You will need to discover which you have.

The original Motorola Alternator on our 1977 is internally regulated
If in doubt about the specs of your particualr Alternator take the
numbers off the id plate to a reputable automotive supply house and
ask them to cross check the numbers against the manufacturers specs.
That will generally give you the information to make an informed
decision without guessing

My alternator appears to be reasonably new. It was installed before
I got the coach, but it looks brand new. I am assuming it is
internally regulated...aren't most alternators these days? I have
not bothered to notice if it has a brand name or any numbers on it.

My chargers have been replaced with a modern unit.
