Sorry for the delay in getting back with you.
Tire temperatures reflect many variables: Ambient temp, road surface temp,
ventilation,
tire construction, tire type, tire loading,
inflation pressure, speed, brake heat, etc.
Tire manufacturers are more concerned about a tires internal temperature, with
two
hotspots being the tires shoulder (thickest part of
the tire) and the tires bead area (area that contacts the rim).
Relative to your question a nominal surface temperature of 150 deg F would not
be
uncommon. Anything over 185 deg F would be abnormal
and would raise a flag relative to 'cause' of the elevated temperature.
Getting a relative feel for the tires temperature is not a bad idea, however to
accurately
determine the temperature would require an
infra-red temperature sensing device or something similar.

This is very interesting Guy. I have been measuring tire temps for a few years
and always wondered what the top end should be. I've noted that the side of the
bus, and toad for that matter, that is in the sun is much higher temp than the
shadded side. But, in no event have I ever noted a temp in the 150 deg F range
let olong the 185 deg F mentioned in your post. I've always thought that the
temps were a bit overstated due to the fact that I have just used the brakes to
stop at a rest area etc. and that may effect it some if it was a long entryway
into the rest area. I usually don't apply much brake until I have exited the
highway, especially if traffic is heavy.
